Afghanistan struggles so much socially because so many family members are either dead, in different countries or nowhere to be found. On pg 9 in The Breadwinner, many people fled Afghanistan because of the war. In the story, it also said a lot of Parvana's friends and classmates were in a different country. On pg 99 in The Breadwinner, it read, “There’s only my mother and me and my two little sisters left,” Shauzia said. “We’re living with my father’s parents and one of his sisters. Everybody fights all the time. I'm lucky to be able to get away from them and go to work.” Their family doesn't seem to have a very good relationship and Shazia's father is gone. On pg 27, Ellis stated that all men have to grow beards or they would be beaten. On pg 31, it said that the Taliban burned books they didn't like and parvana's family had to hide the books inside a shelf, just so they'd have something to do. Along with that, women and girls couldn't go outside, pg 7, or on any transportation without a man escorting them (Ellis pg 38). In addition to that, people had to paint any windows they had black so no one could see the women inside, pg 36.
