Throughout the novel Anthem by Ayn Rand and the song “The Anthem” by Good Charlotte, both narrators find struggle internally trying to find a sense of themselves. This comes back and leads to the theme, individuality cannot be extinguished. Repeatedly Good Charlotte sings, “I don’t ever wanna be you. Don’t wanna be just like you” (The Anthem). Never do they directly identify the person they’re avoiding to resemble, but, from context, it can be inferred that they’re trying to stray away from the “status quo” and live their own life as they would like to. As a child Equality suffered from just the opposite when he thinks, “It is not good to be different from our brothers… So we fought against this curse” (Rand 21). The society of Anthem tried
