The three act structure used in the short film “George Lucas in Love” shapes the story through the use of a set-up, confrontation/build up, and climax/resolution. By following this basic three-act structure, this short film successfully tells an entertaining story that delicately weaves details reminiscent of both Star Wars and Shakespeare in Love, without losing the audience if they’re not familiar with either of the stories.
Act I – The Set Up In act one the audience meets the protagonist, George Lucas, in the setting of his final days before graduation at the university. In this first act, the audience is given all necessary information to set the story by being made aware of his goal; to finish his screenplay, the timeframe to complete his goal; three days, the period in which the story takes place; 1967 and his conflict or difficulty in completing his goal; writer’s block due to an uninspiring topic (space wheat). The audience is also introduced to many of the minor characters of this short film. This causes a revolution in values from negative to positive within the protagonist and he begins to see the inspiration and influences of the characters, objects, and events that have been present around him the entire time. Act two closes out with a montage of George gathering these inspiring details and characters as his writer’s block is lifted and he writes the screenplay ignited by the change in values and encouragement from Marion. This montage escalates the buildup and keeps the plot moving towards the final resolution. The montage, in conjunction with the introduction of a sub plot, or the budding romance between George and Marion, pushes the buildup of act two further and paves the transition into act three and the climax of the
