To think in the mind of any writer is difficult and to see their process is often times more confusing than the story itself. The structure is the essential key in any story , novel, or major work by an author and needs the most time, detail, and consideration taken into it. Oftens the best stories and the best writers will have a basic structure with multiple underlying details and morals hidden within them. One of these writers that has grown popular for one specific novel of his is John Steinbeck with the story Of Mice and Men. This tale revolves around the journey of two men and their attempt to gain a better life as poor ranch boys. The structure in this tale is obvious once the story is read, but until then all of the underlying tones will often times go over peoples head.In the structure of any literary work such as John Steinbeck's Of Mice and Men, there are three key factors to think about; the novel's beginning and end, order of events, and comedic or tragic resolution. After the escape from the local police the first major event in the story for the two boys is the arrival at their next job at a nearby ranch. “‘The boss was expectin’ you last night,’ the old man said. ‘You can have them two beds there.’” This event will show how between the two there is still the hope that things will get better, but there is also the foreshadowing of the new dangers they have to avoid with their new coworkers. This is seen most with Curley, the boss’s son who will attack anyone he knows he can beat; which suggests he and Lenny will have multiple confrontations. “Then Curley’s rage exploded. ‘Come on, ya big bastard. Get up on your feet. No big son-of-a-bitch is gonna laugh at me. I’ll show ya who’s yella.’” This sets up the introduction to what will be the biggest challenge for the pair at the
