Structural Therapy Case Study

Structural therapy may be helpful to Philip if he willingly comes to therapy, commits and actively work with changing the family dysfunction. Assuming Philip is going to come and participate in therapy, I would want him to come in at least once a week initially. I would hesitate to do more than once a week because that would interfere with his life and maybe deter him from continuing to come. I would first want to work with him on his anger toward his father. Potentially having both of them in session and working things out between them or at least decrease hostility between the two of them.
In individual sessions with Philip I would want to educate him on what a healthy family looks like, family roles, and boundaries. Getting Philip to change something that would cause some unbalance to the family system so the rest of the family can see the dysfunction that is going on is a goal of structural therapy. Instead of helping the family so much with money and support, having Philip focus on his life and what he is doing with his future could be a good first step. Some other goals for Philip could be working on finishing school, getting a job, potentially reducing alcohol and drug consumption. Another intervention in structural therapy that would help Philip would be to challenge unproductive thoughts and feelings, which he brings up in

The family is “fucked up” as Philip puts it, however dysfunctional the family is it functions. Staying together is a value that is important for Philip and his siblings. That is a big family to manage for a grown up, let alone his 22 year old sister and himself. His father getting sober and assuming a parental role, helping the family would be ideal. How realistic that would be is questionable. Getting some additional family supports and increasing the family’s socioeconomic situation would be a top priority for this

Additionally, McAdams et al. (2016) found structural family therapy was supported in continuing to be “a viable theoretical platform for family therapy practice in the twenty-first century” (McAdams et. al, 2016, p. 260). This therapy practice is both empowering and evidence based.…

It would take a special therapist with super human powers to successfully treat this family. However, assuming that it was possible, I would use Bowen Family therapy. I believe the members of the family I would treat would be grandma, the caretaker (highered by grandpa) and the three daughters (Karen, Ivy and Barbra), because they seemed to be at the core of the family. Moreover, the caretaker is the only one who is living with mom, and would serve as an outside perspective, so I think it would be beneficial if she was there.…

In ‘Family’ the director indirectly characterises Grace as a personality whom symbolises family ethics as she exemplifies through the dialogue ‘I’m just here to help’ and her actions by leaving her own family to care for her sister, when she was at her lowest, and her children. She illustrates that sometimes when a family member is in need you would have to make sacrifices to assist your own blood and be selfless. The directors have used Grace’s husband as a foil to highlight the authority she obtains when it comes to her mentally unstable sister and her children, Tyler and Maddie. It is suggested that her husband doesn’t feel responsible for Lilly’s children when she is currently having a mental break down. Grace’s husband could also feel the need to distant himself from Lilly and her children due to Grace having a past, sexual relationship with their father.…

In Structural Family Therapy, an intervention that the therapist would apply to the next counseling session would be to examine the invisible rules in the family that governs their function; the therapist would examine all the crossed, ignored, distorted boundaries that the family has in their familial structure (Bitter, 2014). Enactments are another intervention that would help families to form clearer boundaries (Gehart, 2015). This would help Jeanie and her family because it would prevent her for thinking or speaking for her children. The first phase of phase of reenactments is to speak with all family members to try to modify the family structure (Gehart, 2015).…

Addressing these individuals first eliminates confusion when filling out paperwork, thus cutting down on the amount of errors. Additionally, this would include assessing individuals who are barely above the federal poverty level. Addressing and finding adequate insurance for these individuals is first and foremost the most important task before others can be addressed. Moreover, this will help social work practices by eliminating errors, and thus creating a steady stream of individuals with the same issue instead of having individuals with multiple problems in different areas. The second recommendation I would recommend would be to evaluates each individual’s situation and determine what type of preventive services that each client may need.…

I chose this model because the therapist needs to design interventions for change in behavior. According to Milan’s approach, families want to change a problem, while keeping the environment the same. In this case study, Matthew knows that his family’s behavior is very confrontational, yet he has not made any suggestions about staying home more to deal with them. Kiara knows her children are suffering from lack of parental guidance, yet she continues to use drugs. Jesse feels that his father is not there for him.…
