The first is through Structural Functionalism. Structural Functionalism is prominent within the Hunger Games itself. As punishment for rebelling against the capital each district is required to sacrifice one boy and one girl, tributes, to the hunger games. The hunger games is a fight to the death of the 24 tributes where the last person standing is the winner. These “games” are meant to show the districts how totally at the mercy of the Capital they are. It can be seen in many different places in this book. When Katniss volunteered as tribute in place of her sister, the rest of district 12 holds up three fingers to show respect. This gives the mindset that she is one brave individual who is very motivated to win the Games. When Cinna sets her and Peeta on fire during the tribute parade she receives the title “Girl on fire,” this display gains the capitals attention and earns her sponsors. After announcing that Peeta was in love with Katniss, they become the star crossed lovers who are doomed to die.
