Amy’s mother was a famous author of a children’s book called “Amazing Amy” based on Amy, which made plenty of money. Amy Also had a trust fund set up by her parents. Although Nick was not struggling with money, he was not as fortunate as Amy was. The structures that organize diversity in society also organize diversity among families (Zinn et al). In society, wealth is distributed unevenly and families lie in various social and economic classes. This concept of structural diversity is demonstrated in the novel through Nick and Amy’s contrasting family wealth. Inequalities place families in different social locations that enable them to experience family differently. When Nick lost his job and was no longer the male breadwinner and Amy was the only one working, Nick was forced to experience something he never expected. Nick was no longer providing for the family and that was especially hard on him. In the novel, Nick used the last of Amy’s trust fund to open up a bar in hopes of starting a new life, not knowing if it would succeed. Nicks social location in the gender structure was challenged, he no longer was able to take on the role of the male-breadwinner and provider. When Amy goes missing, the police immediately suspect Nick. They find evidence to point at Nick as the suspect that had been placed by Amy. Then, the community finds out Nick had been cheating on Amy, which makes his matter even worse (Flynn). In order for Nick to change the publics perception of him, he uses human agency and actively changes his environment. Nick, his sister Margot, and his lawyer find evidence in favor of Nick in order to prove he is not what Amy is portraying him to be. People use human agency in order to cope and survive, and Nick effectively used human agency to challenge his situation and cope with the struggles of losing Amy and being framed for a murder he did not
