Stroop Test Paper

John Ridley Stroop was an American psychologist who studied the reaction time in individuals. In 1935, he published the Stroop test. The purpose of the Stroop test was to measure an individual’s reaction time and how your brain processes information (Gray). In this experiment, participates would watch a single word appear on their screen. Their task was to indicate as quickly as possible the color of the text that appears on the screen. For example, if you saw the word blue and the color of the text was red you would indicate that the answer would be red. In trials where the color named and the color of the text used are the same are called congruent trials. There were twenty students who completed the Stroop test in my class. On average, my class had a quicker response time to congruent trials than to incongruent trials. Our results differed immensely from the reference data. Overall, my class had a quicker response time for both congruent and incongruent trials. The response difference was 623 milliseconds for the incongruent trials and 613 milliseconds for the congruent trials. One possible cause of the substantial difference between my classes data and the reference data could be that our data comes from young adults who live in the same community and are all receiving the same education. Individually my performance on the Stroop test stood out from the class performance. My response time was slower for both congruent and incongruent trials. My response time was almost double that of the class performance for incongruent trials. I believe that one cause of the difference in my performance compared to the class was that I did this experiment at night, so consequently I was exhausted and did not have the ability to respond
