I grew up in a relatively small Southern California town, surrounded by shrub-covered mountains and filled with a constant, smothering heat. My house is a simple, one-floor, ranch-style on a suburban street, in the middle of a triad of my elementary school, my junior high school, and my high school. Suffice to say, school was never out of walking distance. My parents are hard-working and traditional Asian-Americans, and I grew up immersed in our Filipino culture. I like to think that it was from my parents that I recieved my work ethic.…

I think what sets me apart from other students applying to the University of California is my innate work ethic and drive to be successful. I look back to when I was a child playing catch with my dad in the backyard for hours at a time. I have had a drive to be successful and work hard to accomplish my goals since I was little. This is evident in my years of dedication to baseball. When other kids were playing with their friends or watching television, I was out practicing my craft.…

Because of their motivation to succeed, the mindset of hard work has been distilled in me. My work ethic distinguishes me from others due to the fact that I exceed expectations. The fact that their background environment helped motivate them to succeed and not wanting their children to experience the same path is why my parents are my motivation. Many years ago, a teacher of mine once said “if you love what you do, you’ll never work a day in your life”. Growing up in a working middle class family, money is often the motive when finding a job. I have yet to meet someone in my particular family who genuinely says they work to make a difference, not earn an income. Being the first of my family’s generation to attend college, I made sure that whatever field I go into will be one where I can offer some sort of usefulness to those around me. From a young age, I made it a lifelong goal of mine to be helpful to whoever I can offer it to.…
