The Price of Prejudice Reading old books in seventh grade would not be the most fun activity for most of us, but The Pearl, To Kill a Mockingbird and "Twelve Angry Men" would be an exemption from that category. Each story has racism, which causes the reader to pity the victim and detest the offender. Also in all of the books, the main characters go through a very life threatening and life changing attack, which makes the characters change substantially. Furthermore, all of the stories teach a moral to the readers, which make them learn a lesson and become a better person.…

While constructing a story, there are a few concrete rules all authors must attend too. As people read a story they are either looking to learn something, be entertained, or take something away they can apply to their own lives. In order to fulfill the reader’s purpose, each story must contain relevance to the reader along with an engaging and interesting storyline including internal conflict within the main character. Having relevance to the reader is a key aspect for any story. Personally, when I have to read a story with little to no impact or meaning to my life I’m bored before it even begins.…

Some critics feel that short stories help struggling readers invest more time in reading. When comparing short stories to longer books such as novels, readers may feel that they have more interest in a short story since they can start and finish the story in a maximum time frame of 45 minutes. Due to the brevity of short stories, suspense builds quickly, the key information is clearly displayed, and everything is straight to the point without unnecessary detail. More often than not, struggling readers have trouble keeping their attention on the story and wanting to know what happens next. Short stories do not drag on endlessly and give the message of the story in few words, making them the perfect tool for struggling readers to invest more time in reading.…

“I would rather entertain and hope that people learned something than educate people and hope they were entertained”,(Walt Disney). This is one my most treasured qoutes, one because it comes from the late-great Walt Disney and secondly it describes one more manor of how books work. The series of books that tend to sell the greatest amount of copies tend to be the novels that entertain the reader. Flashback to the fourth grade, at the monumental time when I first started wearing glasses there existed a series of the uttermost importance to me and at times it seemed every other kid called, Percy Jackson and the Olympians. I’ll admit at first I was skeptical…

Ironically, though I wasn’t immediately taken with reading, I became an avid reader after those first few difficult years. I was a regular at my elementary school’s small library, and I competed in everything book-related that I could. Battle of the books, spelling bees, and English classes were my favorite pastimes in grade school. Other children dreaded completing summer reading and literature studies, but I looked at reading…

Whether it be a Goosebumps books or Mark Twain books you 'll go anywhere it leads you, but once I got into middle school and high school the books weren 't like that anymore. School books do have plenty of information in them, but they’re uninteresting to read. Not too many people want to get lost in a book about photosynthesis, they would much rather read a story about action and adventure. I do feel like reading the informational books for studies and homework did help when I would read them to finish my school work, but thats only if I could make myself read through them. Usually I would just skim through the book rather than read it word for word to get the main idea.…

I am giving my book “When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit” by Judith Kerr a 3 and these are some of the reasons why. In the very beginning of this book the author made you want to keep reading and never stop. She did this by explaining each character a little each time you read about them. Also, she would put in some humor while getting to know the characters. For example, when Anna explained to her father how Fraulein Lambeck said that she adores her father in much more than a friendly way, but everyone makes fun of her because of that.…

In seventh grade, my reading experience went farther downhill. The teacher expected us to do projects reflecting over what we had read every time we finished a book, with a minimum of five per trimester. I hated doing these reflection projects, so my quantity of reading fell further to just five books every three months. However, the final nail in the coffin of my reading came in eighth grade. On the first day of school, the teacher informed us that the only genre we would be allowed to read for out reading logs, which were unnecessarily complicated, was nonfiction.…
