Beginning from grade school through middle and high school, we learn how to read and write as we grow. More importantly, we learn how to grab and hold onto many things; the illusions that we aim to achieve, called dreams. The drive to push and better yourself to grasp onto unexpected possibilities, we call opportunities. The belief and confidence that you hold within you, we call faith. Independence as your hope, in all experiences that you’ll be able to make something towards your future.…

Everybody with a high school diploma knows the struggle of turning in a draft paper to the English teacher, and the next day receiving a paper with more scribbles and writing than a doctor’s note from a hypochondriac. These notes are meant to help us, but inevitably make us doubt our writing style, content, and meaning of existence. However we, and also our teachers, may have the wrong idea about revising and annotating. Nancy Sommers’s journal article “Responding to Student Writing”, from The National Council of Teachers of English, discusses this issue in-depth, and by performing a pseudo-study and analyzing the comments teachers made on a particular paper, her group found that in fact the comments teachers make and their effect on the indecisive…

Before this course, I did not know grammar well, and what I did know I did not fully understand. Yet, due to taking the course, I learned more about the structure of the English language, and can use grammar better than I did before. For instance, the first three major assignments were filled with missing comas, verb-tense misuses, and run-on sentences. Now, I may still make mistakes, but I know why I have made them. In other English courses, I had grammar homework and reading assignments that, often, seemed to be busy work, but with this course, I did not think that was the case.…

One of Brandt’s main ideas “Reading Serves Writing,” brought up an interesting point about the connections between reading and writing. The concept that “reading serves writing,” is a relatable subject and impacts many college students. Whether you are writing an essay or reading endless chapters for a class, reading and writing hold a major role in education. The idea that the two are completely separate entities, is an interesting concept. To me, when I think about writing I think about the yin yang symbol.…

It feels like so long ago when I first began this English course. I can remember being so excited about the class topic, racism and social justice, which I felt that I had a lot of passion for. Little did I know that I would have to gather up even more enthusiasm and passion to be able to continue writing papers about the same topic all semester long. This course has tested my endurance, and at many times my patience, and for that I am thankful because I know in the end, it has made me a better writer. Despite various minor challenges this semester I believe that I have put in the hard work that it takes and I have achieved the course goals and will complete this class feeling fulfilled and accomplished.…
