The poem used with this ends with a person talking about the man’s passive role. (Hammack). Brown’s The New Testament was titled for this book might be an approach to tell us to “turn-the-other-cheek.” The poetry Brown writes is almost like is he is speaking to the black community against all the hate in the world that they have…
Mensa often makes references to the historical hardships of the black community that he feels still exist within the justice system. One of the more noteworthy lines from Mensa’s anthem lay in the final verse. Mensa, speaking with intensity directly to police, yells “somebody tell these mothafuckas keep they hands off me/ I ain't a mothafuckin' slave, keep your chains off me.” Mensa is making the connection between the hands of a police officer and the chains on a slave as tools of oppression.…

Growing up as a hispanic woman in America has always been more difficult than I thought it was going to be. There were many times where I felt excluded, judged or like I am not as good as other people. Throughout my life this has always affected my happiness because it was never as easy as I wanted it to be. With that being said, many people that are also a different race also struggle with this problem and this affects their wellbeing as well. I came to realize what a struggle being a person of color is to other people as well after carefully reading a short story by Junot Diaz called “Wildwood” and a poem by Claudia Rankine called “From Citizen Six” where both of the characters were treated unfairly, and ran into issues on a daily basis because…
On April 14th, 2017, proclaimed artist, Kendrick Lamar, released his fourth studio album, titled Damn. This fourteen track album was possibly Lamar’s most personal and most in-depth project yet. However, no song on this album, perhaps, reaches the personal level of the fifth track titled “FEEL.” In this song Lamar gives a super in-depth look at what he believes his biggest issues are and allows the listener to realize your own by confessing his. The purpose of this essay is to conduct a rhetorical analysis of Kendrick Lamar’s “FEEL.”…
Previously, only the black slaves to earn a little by little return to work, but now everyone has their own right, to get their jobs and social status. Now for blacks, it is something to be proud of, because of their social status and equal rights with whites, blacks this is the result of joint efforts. For these efforts, some blacks even paid with their lives. Such as Martin Luther King. The purpose of this writing of the song or not to make money or commercial for the purpose.…
Upon initial reading, “The Victims” by Sharon Olds seems to be a poem that paints the picture of a life of abuse; starting from the dawning of the exploitation and arching over into the life of the abused following the maltreatment. In the work, it is made to be believed that the clear victims of the poem are the speaker and their family—which is a rightful and obvious assumption—but there is another victim that is not as prevalent as that of the speaker and their family: the speaker’s father. After a second read, it is made evidently apparent that although the work does focus on the speaker and their family as the victims of the poem, the ideal that the father is also a victim is explored. Since the father is depicted as an abuser, it is seen…
My Weaponised Generation My generation often calls such words as “abuse,” and “not right,” because we have been fighting fear with our fellow peers beside us. The fight is for the world to shine it's true hue. A hue that shines through the hanging fog of hunger and a falling economy. A vibrant glow of integrity and hope that we wish to spread.…

The War Prayer carries a heavy anti-war message using a cynical tone of religion. The setting of the poem is at height when Imperialism was the strongest. Twain used collective phrases to glorify war and emphasize patriotism. Twain is able to capture this setting by describing a celebration in the streets, “the drums were beat, the bands playing, the top pistols popping, the bunches firecrackers hissing and spluttering”, “flags flashed in the sun” (Perkins, 57). To further capture this image Twain used the pastors speech of “devotion to flag and country.…

By saying that, he starts standing up for his black community. I like how in Kendrick’s lyrics he says that black people are known to be doomed from the start but then he goes on by saying “Remember this, every race start from the block, just remember that. By saying that, he is showing us that every single race starts off the same and is equal but it’s the people that start taking advantage of the less advantaged. After that starts happening the hatred towards one…
Many artists these days tend to sample other authors work into their songs to add a greater purpose or meaning to their music. Although this technique is not used in a lot of genres and appears mostly in hip-hop music, forms of music sampling have been around since the late 1900’s. Artists like Kanye West and Kendrick Lamar are known for sampling other artist’s music or speeches and incorporating them into their songs to enhance the message or theme that is trying to be presented. Kendrick Lamar uses a sample in his song “Alright” to help illuminate what life is like as an African American and the struggles that they face due to their skin color.…
