To begin with, Bruno has a friend that he is not meant to have. Bruno knows that he is not meant to be friends with Shmuel in fact Bruno and Shmuel should be enemies because Bruno is the son of a high ranking Nazi and Shmuel is a Jew in a concentration camp. In the book you can see that the first time Shmuel and Bruno meet is in chapter 10 on page 58 and the first thing Bruno says is “Hello” and Shmuel replies with “Hello” to. Bruno stands up to father because he hates the new house Out-With and wants to go back home in Berlin to his old lifestyle with his friends and where he could go to school and live in his big house. Evidence to show that Bruno doesn’t like the new house is when he stands up to father which is a factor that makes him brave as he shouldn’t argue with his parents. You can see this factor throughout chapter 5 and especially after Bruno and his father have been arguing for a while and Bruno shouts “I don’t want to accept it”. This shows that Bruno is really angry at his father for moving out of their old home in Berlin and is upset where they are living now.
