Stricter Animal Cruelty Laws

Stricter animal cruelty laws are necessary to prevent and stop the horrendous crimes committed against defenseless animals. Animals are abused in many different ways and it happens way too often. That’s why detailed animal abuse laws are needed in society to protect these creatures. Right now there isn’t many things that seriously discourage animal abusers, if the laws and punishments were tougher it would hopefully give them more incentive to stop. Not only is the abuse harmful to the animals but the animal abusers are likely insensitive towards violence, and at risk of committing other crimes including abuse against humans. Some of these animals are victims of horrible crimes such as dog fighting, hoarding, neglect, torture, and abandonment. …show more content…
This sick practice results in terrible injuries for the dogs, which include severe bruising, deep puncture wounds, and broken bones (Dogfighting fact sheet). The dogs used in these events often die from blood loss, shock, dehydration, exhaustion or infection. Sometimes the dogs will suffer for days after the fights until they die. Dog fighting isn’t even the only crime that is committed at these events. “The sale and use of illegal drugs is common at dogfights as well, and other weapons have been found at these events due to large amounts of cash present. Dog fighting has also been connected to other kinds of violence-- even homicide” ( Dogfighting Fact Sheet.) People who go to dogfights weren’t just wandering around and stumbled upon these events. There has been a relationship discovered between animal cruelty and human violence. In one study by the Chicago police department it showed that a large number of offenders that were charged with crimes against animals also committed violent crimes against humans (Animal Cruelty and Human Violence). Pet abuse is also one of the predictors of domestic partner violence. In some domestic and child abuse situations, abusers will threaten violence against pets to control their human victims. “Researchers have found that between 71% and 83% of women entering domestic violence shelters reported that their partners also killed or abused a family pet. And another study found that in families under supervision for physical abuse of their children, pet abuse was concurrent in 88% of the families.”(Animal Cruelty and Human
