Strict Dress Codes In Schools Essay

A common topic that is talked amongst schools is the school’s dress code. Depending on the type of school he or she goes to, the dress code with vary. Most public schools do not have a strict dress code. However, most private schools require uniforms, or the school will have a strict dress code. Although people argue that dress codes prevent inappropriate clothing, students should not be required to follow a strict dress code because they can express their individuality through clothing, dress codes can make it difficult to shop for clothing, it can be sexist towards teenage girls, and it can become very expensive. Students should not be required to follow a strict dress code at school because he or she can express their individuality through clothing. According to Jill McCarter, changing the dress code in schools to become very strict takes away the students’ individuality. If students are not allowed to express themselves at school, where they spend most of their time, they will grow up feeling as if they are not allowed to express themselves. In “’Do School Dress Codes Perpetuate Sexism, Rape Culture?’,” Rowena Lindsay argues that the main reasons the dress code is so strict towards girls is to make sure the males are not distracted by the girls’ bodies. In other words, girls cannot go to school feeling confident about herself because she will have to worry about the males be distracted by her body. It is understandable why the opposition argues this, but a girl should not go into school feeling as if she is a distraction towards the male students. The male students should be taught that it is not acceptable to body shame the girl students in school and out of school.
