Stretching In The Workplace

Many would think that because of their busy work schedule that they would not be able to incorporate any exercise into their workplace. However, that is not the case many would significantly benefit from doing stretches. Especially for those who sit at the desk all day typing. As Donald Graham, author of “Workplace Stretching Programs; Do They Work And Are They Worth the Cost? Voices his opinion on the effectiveness of workplace stretching. “Their muscles become stiff and it is highly recommended that they take a five to fifteen minute break stretching about every hour. ( Graham). This is quintessential because the stretches help to prevent stiffness and atrophy in the muscles mitigating injury as well. But, in the long term it helps to avoid musculoskeletal diseases that will occur during aging if not maintained. “On average, $5 is spent for every $1 of medical expense on a typical injury. One type of injury that is subject to high costs is strains or soft tissue injuries, sometimes called musculoskeletal disorders” ( Graham). Hoffman corroborates this statement by stating, “ Increased levels of some forms of physical …show more content…
As previously stated, workers should try any type of stretch to get their blood flowing to become more alert and more efficient. A good exercise that is good for people who type for a majority of their workday should incorporate arm raises as well as any stretch related to the wrist so as to avoid carpal tunnel syndrome. An excellent stretch would be the wrist extensor stretch where the individual tilts their wrist laterally to keep the wrist muscles in shape. Trunk twists work great because they essentially realign the posture of the back. When people first type they have great back posture, yet as time passes their back posture gradually declines.
