Going to college is a stress within itself, but alongside the big move there are other things that come with moving out. As I have come to realize quite quickly since coming to UNK, I have noticed that stress management is a big tool to have. To keep your sanity you have to be able to have a tight grip on what is important because the transition from high school to college is one of the biggest transitions someone will ever face in their entire life. Alongside stress management you need to have a sense of time management, or at least an idea. Time management will be the greatest life saver because when you have all sorts of different tasks piling up on you, you have to decide what is more pertinent. One of the main problems I have is surfing the web in the middle of my homework. The typical scenario is usually when I am writing a paper or doing some form of work and then I get bored or distracted and I will go onto the internet. It could be to use Facebook or in most cases I enjoy watching YouTube videos. The internet is not the enemy, it is clearly my inability to strap down and get my homework done. I have no drive or perseverance to keep doing my homework. I get distracted and then I get sucked into the internet. I will later realize that I haven’t done any of my homework and suddenly be panicked to finish it. Vye, Christopher, and Scholljegerdes proposes that we need to create a map of what is important and urgent to us right then. This is called the “Time Management Matrix” divided into 4 boxes. Before it was discussed that internet and social media are prevalent distractions, but so are outside people. Living in a dorm room there are always friends or other people wanting to - but not intentionally - take your important time away from you. Being an individual who cannot easily say no to a social gathering, it something I have seen become more of an issue. Saying “no” to a situation can help me accomplish more work because there are no distractions. If I want to spend my time with other people I need to plan accordingly for these type of activities, which goes hand in hand with time management. Moon states that it is okay to say no and there is no reason to feel guilty about saying it. (119) Managing difficult situations is going to be prevalent throughout college because managing my time will become more and more important. Learning to say no can be difficult because it is hard to do, but not it is not
