Each song becomes literary by speaking to the depressed listener through emotions given by the lyrics or tone. Even if the song 's topic hasn 't been experienced by them directly. According to Levitin in the chapter explaining comfort songs, "The connection - even to a stranger - helps the process of recovery, for so much getting better seems to rely on feeling understood – one of the reasons why talk therapy is so successful in cases of depression" (Levitin). Metallica 's song "One" is a great example of this musical structure. Based on the book "Johnny Got His Gun" by Dalton Trumbo, the song 's context is referring to an incapacitated soldier who is searching for death after losing all hope in living. The details of helplessness explain in the lyrics such as, "Darkness/Imprisoning me/All that I see/Absolute horror/I cannot live/I cannot die/Trapped in myself" (Metallica). Indirectly, I can identify with the words and the tone of the song, although I 've never felt what it 's like to be incapacitated. The main character in this song is trying to survive during a nuclear holocaust while accepting that there is nothing they can do as people die. Although I haven 't known a nuclear holocaust; the sensation of sadness I get when I hear the harmonizing singing of the words die and cries I can compare to from past knowledge. People naturally sync with certain expressive phrases or sounds that give us a similar feeling of what humans go through. Imagining myself as these characters who’ve transpired through a lot helps in realizing that my life isn 't as bad, even if it’s the same. "Music elicits cognitive responses. Cognitive responses to the music are unique to the individual, for it is the individual alone who can assign cognitive meaning to the musical experience" (Heal). Comparatively, there is the other side to comfort songs; this time having a direct meaning to the
