The stressors I encounter on a daily basis are inevitable, but the way I perceive them is up to me. Without actively choosing to cope, stress can build up in my life and deleteriously impact my perspective. While coping mechanisms vary, the most effective of these, I’ve found, is to acknowledge a stressor without allowing it to evolve into stress. Recognizing and accepting stressors is the first step to handling them. We can ignore them, which will slant our perspectives unrealistically, or we can embrace them. Once this is done, we can own our stress and be in control it. Recently, I lost my wallet. To deny this wouldn’t have helped my situation. Instead, I accepted that my wallet was gone and took necessary action to mitigate the effects, like by cancelling my debit card. Their distribution of time is between scheduling a tutoring appointment to cram for the SAT’s, visiting colleges, and thinking about the egregious amount of debt they’ll accrue in the first years of life on their own. As time progresses, society places more pressure on young people who have yet to even develop a coping system. This is why it’s so important to understand stressors, accept them, and take control of how we react to them early in life. It would be a radical movement to adopt a culture that resembles that of the Italian’s, who value pleasure and satisfaction regarding life more than they do a system of incessant advancement towards success. While we might look to this culture for inspiration, a small step in the direction of improving our happiness in life is more realistic. This small step may be through mitigating stress, as discussed, or, in other terms. To choose happiness. Our perspective is a sort of mental landscape we create for ourselves.
