Stress Essay Stress is the response your body and mind has to being challenged or threatened. Common causes of stress (called stressors) include major life changes such as switching schools, catastrophes such as a flood, environmental problems such as abusive parents, and everyday problems like an argument with a friend. When these stressors occur, your body goes through the three stages of stress called the alarm stage, the resistance stage, and the exhaustion stage. The alarm stage happens when the stressor is first introduced. In this sage, your body releases adrenaline and your fight or flight instincts kick in while you decide whether to face the problem or run from it. In the resistance stage, your body becomes accustomed to the stress, and has found a method to cope with it. The exhaustion only occurs after you’ve been dealing with the stressor for weeks or months. In this stage, you’re body can no longer handle the stress, and you constantly feel depleted. While moderate levels of stress can help you focus or work harder, experiencing chronic stress can create negative physical, social and …show more content…
The short term effects related to these aspects include irritability, mood swings and increased crying. One way your emotional and mental health is threatened is that stress can cause you to feel hopeless and trapped.This can lead to mental illnesses such as depression and anxiety. Stress often times causes you to withdraw from your friends and family, which isolates you, creating problems with your social health. Many people also turn to drugs or alcohol in response to stress. This negatively impacts your Mental health because you’re damaging your brain, and social health because people you’re close to could cut you out of their lives for being a negative influence. Constantly suppressing your emotions through the use of drugs and alcohol throws your emotional health out of balance as
