Knowledge of what your strengths are is a necessary step towards success, but first we must understand what the word strength means. People’s understanding of strengths is often confused with skills. The difference between the two is that strengths are a natural ability whereas a skill is an ability that is learned. Understanding your strengths and the acquisition of skills to support those strengths create the ideal partnership in the development of said strengths. Curiously I looked up the themes that I had thought should be there and soon realized that how I associated with them was incorrect. I was sure analytical would be amongst my top 5 but in reading the strength insights realized what I attributed to being analytic were actually strategic traits which was identified in my assessment. After reading a few chapters of Strengths Quest, I was instructed to participate in the Strengths Finder assessment (Anderson, Clifton, & Schreiner, 2006). It also provided a detailed description of what having those strengths mean and examples of how they are prominent in a person 's life. After taking the StrengthsFinder survey, I discovered that my five dominant strengths are empathy, harmony, consistency, relator, and restorative.…

After reading an article in the Harvard Business Review, titled Moral Mazes by Robert Jackall, I realize that I share some deep ideology-if you will-with the leaders in the corporate world when it comes to defining success. I ,too, tend to view success as what matters the most, what legitimates striving, and what makes everything, including self-image worthwhile. This approach of viewing success could be attributed to the cultural backgrounds that I grew up in, the socioeconomic status of my family, and the brokenness of this world. But the problem with this approach of viewing success -for me at least- was the fact that I didn’t realized the detrimental impact it was having on me as a person. It was negatively impacting my actions, my interests,…

Interpersonal skills are essential in providing affective services such as counselling. The call by Peader O’Gulin introduced interesting ideas about one sided feelings, determination and shutting people out, whilst engaging me with an action-packed story. In this novel, Conner has unreciprocated feelings towards Nessa, who is crippled, although he feels wrong for feeling this way about her, as he believes her disability makes her unworthy of him, this frustrates him, and he takes these frustrations out on her. Eventually he gives into these feelings, forcing himself upon her, and is rejected by her fighting him off. Anger overwhelms him and he plots a way to kill her, as revenge for her embarrassing and rejecting him. This reminded me of a scene from the film Schindler’s list, where Amon beats Helen Hertz out of frustration because…
