Helping people has been something I have wanted to do in a career since I was in junior high. I began my path, focusing on nursing in high school. My senior year of high school, I achieved the goal of getting my CNA. Since achieving that goal, I felt that this was not a good fit for me. Having the hands on experience was something I did not like very much, and I knew that I belonged to a different career path. However, I still really wanted to help people, but I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do. In high school, I had a lot of friends who went through some tragedies in their lives, such as, abuse that really destroyed them emotionally. The biggest influence in my life to become a social worker is my mom. My mom has worked for a group of social workers in private practice for about eleven years. Social work has been a part of my life for a very long time and I have always admired the work that the people do at the office where my mother works. My mother and her co-workers have supported my decisions and helped me to choose how to go about my education and career path. My current job, working for the Tazewell County health department as a sight coordinator for the twenty-first century school program, has been a major aspect in supporting the career path that I have chosen. Being a caring person is something that influences me to become a social worker. Knowing that I care about people and wanting to help has been a huge influence. I have always put the feelings of others before mine in order to ensure their happiness. You have to put the feelings and values of your clients before your own to help them to the best of your abilities. In social work it is an important factor to be a caring person to others.
