A Worn Path Reflection

As I reflect at the end of this semester on my work in your Grammar Strategies class, I can see clearly how much I have improved as a writer. I have learned to notice my strengths and weaknesses and to learn from all of them. I engaged in several assignments and the feedback that I received from you. I have learned from critical reading how to recognize an author`s purpose by analyzing the evidence that the author provides in his/her text. To understand the tone of the text by categorizing examples. I also learned how to better understand the text by restating the idea in my own words (by questioning what is the text about?).
My portfolio letter includes two essays “Living Like Weasels” by Annie Dillard and “A Worn Path” by Eudora Welty. Through these assignments, I have obtained skills to focus on a purpose and most importantly have the ability to respond to

The story was a little difficult to understand but after close reading, I understood the purpose of the story and idea of the story. Through this assignment, I learned how to make general observations about my relationship with my reader (What motivation does my writing tend to have?). The most important skills I obtained that how to contextualize an idea by saying a bit about its topic. Learned to pay a close attention to details. Because details are essential to an effective example. They offer information that specifically deals with the idea. For example, main character`s last name is Phoenix which symbolizes “a little bird” that obtains new life by rebirthing from ashes. Not paying attention to details and analyzing to the main idea were my weakness but through those assignments I obtained certain writing strategies and worked on my weakness by practicing rules which I learned from your course. I am still improving my writing skills and grammar strategies by attending writing clubs, tutoring

My tenth-grade experience summed up in one word would be “impactful”. It impacted me in a way that my previous school years could never compare to. The past few years in school involved compliments from teachers who believed I had the work ethic and the smarts to be put in an honor’s class. Only for them to never put me in an honor’s class. The phrase “you should be in the honor’s classes” rung repeatedly in my head to the point where it didn’t seem like a compliment anymore, it seemed like a constant jab at the fact that I wasn’t in the honor’s classes.…

Writing was not a subject that held my interest in high school. Throughout the last twelve years I have found myself having to write letters, proposals, and business correspondence for my employers. I would complete the assignment and move on to the next task. Deciding to further my education I enrolled in Daytona State College and my first class was your ENC 1101. I have seen a change in my pre-class writing style; I have honed my skills, and the different techniques I have learned while taking this course have only improved my writing style.…

The many skills that I have acquired include in-depth research, more through drafts, fluidity of my paper, and better outlines. These skills will help me writing in the future because I need good in-depth research, fluidity, and more through drafts to have a good starting point and will give me a better idea on what I need to add. The most effective thing we did in class was peer reviewing others essays because I got to see different writing styles and different ideas on how to incorporate my evidence better or different choice of words. Even though I have developed good skills for the future, I still have struggles in my writing. This class has helped me to recognize what I struggle with in writing so in the future I can recognize it and improve on my weaknesses.…

For my portfolio, I compiled my best writing pieces from this class into one folder. I chose which works were the best not based on grade alone, but on how they represent my writing style and how it has evolved and progressed throughout the course of this semester. I chose one timed, 500 word, in-class essay, my best personal essay, my best out-of-class essay with MLA documentation, and my best paper with an annotated bibliography. In this short essay I will explain why each of these represent me as a writer and show growth in my writing experience.…

Over the course of this semester I learned a handful of things about myself as a writer, that will help me develop as a more proficient writer over the course of my four years here. As a writer one of my strengths is backing up my argument with solid and concrete evidence that truly makes the reader believe what they are reading. Another area of my writing that I excel in is being able to process great ideas that follow the guidelines and the prompt. With that being said I have also seen that while the ideas may come with ease, I do have a challenging time with getting the ideas from my head onto paper in a manner that isn’t so disorganized that it makes the reader second guess themselves. Another shaky part of my writing comes much before the actual forming of sentences.…

This English class has been very helpful in my efforts to improve my writing abilities, but has also been very challenging due to there being a different median for every essay. It’s been a heavy work load especially this semester since I decided to enroll in five classes, but in the end it has been very beneficial indeed. I can’t say that writing essays has been one of my strong points but I believe that this course has helped me improve tremendously and it has also made me feel a lot more comfortable with my writing. While in high school I would usually write all of my essays a day before the due date a habit of mine that was very difficult to overcome, but now I have learned from my mistakes.…
