My professor always noted that my grammar is unsatisfactory. I don 't use the right tenses , my sentence structure, and punctuation are wrong. This caused my essay grade to be low. I believe it is the lack of proofreading and just skimming through it. As a college student, these concepts should be really easy for me to comprehend but it’s not. Now, when I am writing an essay, I try to proof-read carefully more than once. The lack of explanation causes my essays to be vague. To improve now and in the future, I will go to my professor or the writing-center to give me advice on how to develop ideas, read varitations of essays and study how the writers develops their ideas, and spend time annotating. Over the course of English 102, I have developed a new set of skills and learned to become a better writer. When I first came into English 102 I struggled with many different concepts of writing. During the semester in English 102, my writing became stronger because I learned how to incorporate evidence into my argument, do more thorough research, have smoother transitions, and have more organization throughout my essay. I learned how to peer review better and to take what others say and incorporate it into my essay. In the beginning, before English 102, I struggled with good organization and flow to an essay, sandwich evidence into paragraphs, and having strong arguments in persuasive essays.…

English 1010, defined by academic standards, is to develop in first-year college writers a deeper understanding of the complexities of writing through instruction and guided practice in the skills, processes, and strategies necessary for effective, successful writing. In my past semester of English 1010, I was able to demonstrate my abilities to be an effective writer and enhance my writing skills through guiding essay projects. I do believe my abilities were improved in topics including: finding the author’s purpose, explaining ideas, revising, editing, proofreading, organizing the structure of my paper, and etc.…

Adequate writing was always a struggle for me because I struggled with coming up with topics to write about. Even when teachers gave us prompts to write about I struggled writing about them mostly because I thought writing was boring. Another reason I was discouraged by writing was I would spend hours at a time trying to come up with ideas for a prompt and would barely come up with any ideas to write about. Being a civil engineering major I see why writing is so important in my career field. My experience with writing has had its good moments and its bad moments.…

Throughout the semester, I was required to write essays for EN 101. In previous years, I wrote mostly the same style of essays, however, this semester I was required to write many different styles of essays. Thus, I was forced to leave my comfort zone for writing and to challenge myself, which in turn helped to improve my writing. My essays that I have wrote for EN 101 demonstrate that I have improved in supporting my thesis, keeping the paper organized, and creating better conclusions. Although my writing has improved, I still need to work to create stronger transitions between paragraphs and new thoughts within my papers.…

However, the main point is colleges should produce writers who can actually use writing as a source for their future jobs and the questions is how can they do that? For example, I want to major in biology. Even though I major in biology, writing would be important to become more successful in my future career. One good way would be giving students an assignment where they require them to write papers on subjects of their choice that have something to do with biology. Since they can choose their own topics, it would help them to get more interested in writing. Also, scientists use the scientific research essay as a communication. If you improve your writing skill in scientific research papers, it would provide the readers with better understand of your work and its significance. Another example is writing or communication is essential across engineering. Some people might wonder why writing would be important for engineers. Lacking in communication skills can inhibit an engineer’s ability to get a job at some large technology companies. To prevent this, colleges should provide a course in technical writing where it helps them to write clearly and accurately. Most people know that it is very…

As I have progressed through school writing has been my Achilles heel. I was never fond of writing and I always dreaded the idea of writing essays. I was never a strong writer. I always considered myself a subpar writer. I believed that I was capable of meeting expectations rather than exceeding. College and high school English are drastically different. High school English was less demanding, while College English requires lots of focus and attention to detail. English 1101 was filled with growing pains and learning experiences. At first, I was overwhelmed by the criticism noted on my essays, however the criticism motivated me to improve writing to eliminate the negative feedback. Throughout the year I faced situations where I struggled with…

My writing process is similar to making art in many ways. When painting, one has to be delicate and deliberate, hoping for the best, but working with mistakes. The colors on the canvas are softly brushed onto the paper, and the sketch below drafts a form created from the depths of the mind. Every word must come together to create an image that speaks to the audience. A lot of the process is involved even before putting my pencil to the page. I have to come up with an idea of what to even draw in the first place, and I have to find some kind of inspiration that will guide me. This is the same with my writing process, especially when assigned a topic. I have to find some source of inspiration for the topic or my writing becomes flat and boring. When painting, I create a rough draft of what I plan to paint. This sketch is often a separate page that is full of scribbles and studies of what I plan to draw, similar to creating an organizational diagram of my writing ideas and picking out what I plan to write about.…

The first part of this semester was nothing like I imagined English 101 would be like. Since I did not write many papers in high school, it was a struggle for me to challenge myself as a writer. In the beginning it was nerve racking and stressful as I wrote, but as time went on it started to feel more natural. For class I have written a summary of Henry Wechsler’s, “Getting Serious about Eradicating Binge Drinking,” and discussed the Pros and Cons to his article in a response paper. So far this semester I have successfully achieved the skills with the writing process and the purpose and audience analysis; however, I am still developing as a writer with grammar and mechanics.…

Upon my entry into English 1010-02, my first college writing class, I expected to breeze through the course with an easy-A and minimal effort after my successful completion of AP English 11 this past year. I began the year with the utmost confidence in my writing abilities, and believed that my skills were above par. It wasn’t until I received my score on the essay evaluation for my First-Week Essay- a measly five out of twenty- that I realized that this was not the case. At first, I was astonished that my seemingly exceptional writing skills had not earned me the A that I believed I deserved. However, as time went on I came to the realization that I had not put in nearly enough time or effort into the paper to receive more than a C at most. This epiphany helped me recognize that I could not be…

    My Writing Experience

It was always difficult for me to write an essay in the English language. Douglas’ essay showed the true importance of writing with the following lines: “I
wished
 to
learn
how
 to
write, as
 I
might
have
occasion
to
write
my
own
pass.
I consoled
myself
with
the
hope
that
I
should
one
day
find
a
good
chance. Meanwhile, I
would
learn
to
write” (p.4). Although my experience in quite far from the character in the essay, we, however, have the same need to learn how to write properly. In Kuwait, we wrote all essays with the same method in Arabic. I was shocked that the English language had more than one method in writing essays. When my teachers in UCR told me to write an essay, I wrote the wrong method. For example, when my teacher told me to write a story, I wrote a formal essay and when he told me to write a formal essay, I wrote a story. In that time, I could not give up because that was my dream to study in an American university, so I tried hard to learn methods of writing. Also, I had other problems and I still have when I write essays including grammar. These affected my grades and they continue to affect my future grades if I do not do anything about them. The good thing is that I am already working hard to avoid them as much as I can. My UCR teachers had a big part in making me better at writing essays. They did all that they could to teach me how to write. Finally, I came here to the University of South Alabama because I got 75 in TOEFL exam while UCR wants a score of…

As I think about my experiences throughout the semester of English 101, I have realized that I have learned some very important requirements that are important to help improve my writing. “Progress is impossible without change, and those who cannot change their minds cannot change anything (George Bernard Shaw).” During this course, reading and comprehending the materials given was not only a tough task for me but it was also demanding. I was challenged to change my thought process on what it was to be a good writer. The concept of understanding the value of correctly communicating thoughts differs from learning to apply the techniques needed to communicate successfully. However, I was continually challenged by the essays and discussion assignments.…

I have less grammar errors, and I am able to do a well structure and organize essays. During this year I had to do a lot of essays not only for my English class but also for my college 's applications. Doing college’s essays were complicated because I had to do a lot of them in a short amount time. I never had done an essay for a college before, so I wanted to make sure I did the best I could. When I started my essays I had a lot of problems of explaining my ideas because the questions for the essays were not that specific, so I had to be more creative with my writing. When I did my essay I try to focus on how the questions relates to my personal qualities and take a specific angle. I also try to be honest with the information that I wrote in my essay so it can be more personal. The experience of writing my college essays really helps me because I was able to write a good personal essay and see a different side of my writing abilities. In my 12th grade English class I had to write a social issue research paper, and I had to choose my own topic. I wrote about granting citizenship to illegal immigrants. For this essay I knew I had to research a lot about my topic and find a lot of facts that supported my opinion, For me it was hard to find resources that had enough information for me to use and that it was valid. For this paper I effort myself to write a very informative and well…

I form an outline and organize my ideas into one space which helps me understand what my main points are and helps me understand how I could My weaknesses are poor time management, getting distracted, and procrastination till the last minute to finish my essays. I do not revise my essays very much besides taking into consideration my peer’s comments. I need to give myself more time to work on my second draft and the revision of that second draft; I usually stay up late writing this essay and I would like to space out my work over a period of time instead of cramming it two days before the essay is due. I usually get distracted when typing an essay because I go through different social media websites and browse through them until I realize that I have to finish my essay; I usually watch videos on YouTube or message my friends on Facebook; I should limit myself from distractions by putting away my phone or even having a post-it note reminder to not stray away from my essay because I will regret it when I am still working on my essay at 2:00 in the morning. For more peer editing and reviewing, I could go to the Writing Center on campus and meet with one of the volunteers there for more advice on how to develop my essay more. I believe that I write more when I am interested in the topic of the assignment; People tend to write more when…
