Twitter Strengths And Weaknesses

As we can see from the figure above, US advertisers spend $165 Billion on advertising in 2012. Notice a majority ($66.4 Billion) was spent on TV advertising. The average length of a TV announcement is 30 seconds. How effective are these advertisements if the average attention span of an American is 8 seconds (the average attention span of a goldfish is 9 seconds)(Weinreich, Obendorf, Herder, & Mayer, 2008). This means that the average American loses interest and potentially doesn’t pay attention to a majority of advertisements that are used today which are an average length of 30 seconds.
Is there a way to advertise, and not lose attention of an average American?

Some of these weaknesses include limitation of 140 characters per post, the fact that twitter is a fast paced environment with 100s of thousands of tweets being posted per hour, and there are security risks as well.
Also, only having 140 characters is a huge weakness of Twitter(Hanlon 2013), as this restricts the size of your post, therefore limiting the amount of information you can share. There is no such limit on other social media websites such Facebook. However this feature makes Twitter unique among social media websites.
Another weakness is that the average lifespan of a tweet is one hour, meaning that if your tweet is not read within the first hour of its posting, the chance of it producing a reaction, such as a retweet drop to 3%(Lardinois

Another risk is having confidential information accidently tweeted out by an employee. These risks can be overcome by having a secure password, changing that password often, or at the first sign of an intrusion. Companies should also develop and maintain a social media policy dictating who and what can be posted on social media.
Security Concerns
As with anything on the internet, it has a risk of being hacked, or a security “hole” being discovered. This was the case when the “heartbleed” bug was discovered, that affected numerous websites, such as dropbox, and popular social media websites such as Twitter. This bug meant that a sneaky hacker could get back door access and steal passwords, which would lead to hijacked accounts.
Another security concern is that your account could be hijacked by either a hacker, or an ex-employee with a vengeance. This may lead to bad tweets coming from your account without your knowledge or

In her reading she talks about the positive and negative effects of Twitter. I feel the same that social networking sites like Twitter and Facebook can be beneficial as well as disturbing. Eltahawy writes, “I first learned of the bomb attack, which took place a few minutes into the New Year against a Coptic Christian church in Alexandria, Egypt, via Twitter” (164). She says as soon as a bomb attack took place, it was already updated on twitter and thus how she came to know about the attack. In the blink of an eye, you can get the recent updates regarding any news from twitter.…

Probably not. Twitter is a social media platform for people to post short statements for their followers to see. Last year, a former Twitter developer was secretly videotaped during a conversation he was having. In that conversation, he revealed that twitter participated in an act called ‘Shadowbanning’ which is a way of silencing people without their knowledge. This is different from normal banning because shadowbanning does not notify the user, in fact, the user isn’t aware anything changed.…

Teleommunications giant, AT&T recognized from the beginning the importance of Twitter. It utilizes the platform to disseminate important information about its network, disaster recovery efforts in storm ravaged areas, social, and charity efforts, just to name a few. Social media in the workplace has been controversial for a while. There are different sides, the good and the bad. The cons involve problems with the law and bans. Like the case of a man working at a health care place and getting fired after posting a threat. He said that he was only venting about the patient (Horowitz, 2014).…

Twitter is very limited in that one can only post 140 characters per individual tweet. Twitter also makes it effortless for one to become lost in confirmation bias. While one will probably follow people that they know personally, it seems natural to start following a pro-feminism account or an anti-feminism account depending on one’s views. Once a person starts polarizing their accounts in one direction, they become vulnerable to the rhetoric of set beliefs only. This is damaging as they may not understand the full story of an incident like Colin Kaepernick refusing to stand during the national anthem.…

" When examining the question Does government have the civic duty to monitor internet content, I look at the internet for answers. I determined that the government doesn't exactly control because social media reserves its rights to be free from control in the clause of the first amendment "" Freedom of the Press"". At first I believed this statement but when looking at more information I learned that our local governments turn to social media first when looking for a person. I was talking to a police officer when he told me something that stuck with me. " "Everything you thought you deleted never really did get deleted off the internet"".…

If you've been online for as long as I have, you might remember the days when you noticed the occasional person with an animated GIF Twitter profile picture. Twitter then went and made the GIF against Twitter's policy laws and users could no longer have them, even if they managed to come up with a workaround to get them working. Noways, you just don't see them at all with Twitter either clamping down hard on the rule, or more people realizing that they were against the user policy. Rumor has it that the Twitter GIF is against the policy because they were taking too long to load over a normal profile picture that requires less loading time. I haven't done the research to either confirm or deny that, but what I do know is that they are not allowed.…

Heidi Schlumpf makes it clear in her essay, “Slacktivism” Makes the World a Better Place from the Couch, that social media does have the opportunity to create improvements that last through the interactions of its users. She argues that slacktivism doesn’t provide immediate change, yet it is a great way for people to get involved in a particular cause. After exposure to a topic, it creates interactions and sharing among users that has the power to overcome topics our society faces because of social media’s reachability, ability to unite, and accessibility. One of social media's greatest assets is that social media can reach many in a short amount of time. A post can be viewed by at least a 100 hundred people that a user personally knows.…

When you hear the word “social media” what do you think of? Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, even Snapchat is what I would imagine. I am sure we can all admit that we have one or even all of these that were named. While Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Snapchat are easy ways to communicate with friends and family, few stop to consider the implications its usage may have for them in the future, or the hidden dangers of having an account. Besides the effect of your eligibility for employment that comes with these networks, impair a person’s ability to handle real life situations, and allow unknown predators access to private information.…
