Today we are discussing Single payer healthcare systems. A single payer healthcare system is a term used to describe a type of financing system. It refers to one person or organization acting as the payer. In the case of healthcare, a government run organization would collect all fees and pay out all healthcare costs. One country that uses this system is the U.K.
Some strengths of this system include coverage for all, it decreases the paperwork doctors have to do, it lowers the cost of healthcare, there are no insurance companies involved, and only one buyer is required. Now what I mean by coverage for all is that everyone gets healthcare and are covered to the same extent, and nobody can be denied treatment regardless of their disease or previously existing ailment, unlike the insurance companies. These include that it is government controlled, reduces development, there are less benefits, it contributes to the drug abuse issue, and it promotes the rising demand for welfare. by making this controlled by the government all physicians, research universities, and medical equipment manufacturers become “employees” of the government. What I mean by reduces development, I mean that it creates no financial incentive to research or develop new treatments and technologies in medicine. I am now going to explain what they mean by less benefits, people will be paying more taxes but receiving less benefits. The way this system contributes to the drug abuse problem is by allowing drug addicts to the drugs that they are currently addicted to.
