During a session, the teacher should allow the learners to access varied activities which take into account their different learning styles and allow them to develop their personal thinking and learning skills. Teaching is not just about imparting knowledge it is about empowering the learner and giving them the tools to explore a subject further. If a learner asks a question which the teacher cannot answer on the spot, this should be seen as an opportunity to encourage learners to go and find out for themselves.
Wherever possible, functional skills should be embedded within the activities taking place in the lesson. The strength in this is that the teacher can encourage the learner to develop their skills within the vocational area they wish to pursue. Depending on the activity learners who prefer active and kinaesthetic based lessons can develop quickly. However a limitation to the utilisation of embedding functional skills is that learners may not have identified their career pathway and therefore will have no interest in taking part in lessons based around a specific career. Individual learning needs must be addressed. For example dyslexic learners should be offered resources which are appropriate for them and handouts printed on coloured paper where applicable.
When delivering to a group of mixed ability learners it is imperative that all learners, regardless of their level of ability, feel an integral part of the group. Rather than the teacher trying to meet all learners on their levels an approach that can be taken is the use of peer teaching. This is where a higher level learner is paired with a lower level learner to assist and support where necessary to complete the task at hand. However, it is most important to ensure that the lower level learner is not excluded from the group by the higher level learner there to assist.
The sharing of ideas and resources should naturally take place between teachers in order for learners to benefit from both creative and traditional ideas for learning. Technology now plays an important part in planning of resources so once again it is important for the teacher to keep up to date with new developments and undertake further training where required.
