These aspects of my study are an integral part of being successful in my studies although I do struggle on a regular basis with these aspects of study and self-management. Time management is an important skill to have as it allows for not only a more efficient study environment it also creates a less stressful environment for learning. In conjunction with this good time management allows for better decisions to be made as it creates more time and therefore the ability to deliberate all aspect of the topic that is being studied. Additionally, oral communication is something that I personally find difficult and is a very important part of being within an academic environment be it for a presentation or working in a group environment. Oral communication allows for a student to ask questions effectively and concisely and therefore will enrich a learning experience. It also allows for the active participation within a group environment especially within workshops and group assessment without this key skill there can be potential negative repercussion within group environments. In relation to time management there are strategies that are available to me either within my own volition or with the aid of; lectures, tutors, peers and support staff. To improve upon this weakness it may be beneficial to prioritise time and write up a calendar to keep to a set timetable. To facilitate this change in habit I could also employ the help of tutors to ask questions in relation to a good work ethic and ways to reduce the rates of procrastination as well as setting reasonable goals for my studies i.e. finish readings by a certain date. Oral communication is another facet of academic success that I acknowledge to be an area that I struggle to excel in. To improve upon this I will take it upon myself to attend events that will empower me to interact with others who I may not have met through my normal study routine; this in turn will aid me in becoming more confident in expressing my views to a group/tutor/lecturer. Lastly to become more proficient in my numeracy understand I wish to expose myself to more data and visual representations of numerical statistics. To do this I will have to access varying databases as well as practice my ability to process and compare them in an academic fashion; this being the representation of numeracy within a written form as evidence to a hypothesis. Upon completing the StrengthsFinder survey, it is determined my 5 greatest strengths are the learner, achiever, competition, strategic, and relator, all of which I expected (Clifton, Anderson, & Schreiner, 2006). While reading the text I examined the various themes of different strengths, relating closely to the 5 assigned by the survey, I am impressed by how well the explanations were written in the book, Strengths Quest Second Edition. The text in correlation with the materials provided from the StrengthsFinder survey brought forth meaning and depth into finding out exactly the type of person I am. Learning is listed as my top strength in the survey (Clifton, Anderson, & Schreiner, 2006). I believe I have used that trait extensively throughout…
