My writing portfolio contains many diverse types of works. Through high school and college my writing ability has improved gradually, and is evident in these various pieces. I have always had a natural capacity to write decently, giving my writing certain strengths. But my writing also possesses lingering weaknesses that I strive to overcome. Additionally, there are many works that I would like to pursue and create in the future that would add greatly to the quality of my existing portfolio.

My writing mostly follows prompts that I do not choose so I may not be as interested in what I am writing. This can cause my writing to seem boring and detached, which is good for a scientific research paper, but not for a more personal piece. I hope my writing could be interesting enough to keep a reader’s attention so this is something that I actively try to fix. Also, until this year, my writing had ever been seriously critiqued. I had always gotten good grades on my essays without many comments from professors so I assumed that I was a decent writer. This semester I have been able to realize where my writing falls short and I appreciate the critiques that I have gotten so I can improve my writing. The most prevalent issue I have is writing in the passive voice and using any “to be verbs”, and these issues are clear throughout y portfolio. I never realized these before now so now I am trying to edit these out of my work so my writing can be more meaningful. Further, I do not like to admit that I never spent much time editing my work until this year as well. Since this realization, I have spent much more time and put more effort into editing my writing, and this has made a significant difference in the caliber of my writing. There are also many works that I would like to add to my

Little did I know that was not the case. After receiving my grade and feedback I realized my sentences were choppy and not well put together. When I submitted my paper the second time not only did I receive a better grade but also a better understanding of what my papers should look like and what the content should include. I really enjoyed writing this paper, because it allowed me to write about something I have a passion for. I really enjoy writing narratives, but I believe the easiest and best paper I wrote in this class would be essay two.…

What I ended up doing was completing a paper with the best of my ability and expecting it to be graded at a minimal score. Each one of my papers exceeded the minimal score and gave me confidence as a writer, a feat I did not accomplished until now. Scoring beyond the minimal expectations for myself did not only raise my confidence as a writer but the results behind my success came from the techniques I learned in the class. I believe I finally learned a formulaic structure to follow with tackling written assignments. Personally, starting any type of paper or written assignment has been a challenge for me in the past, however it has changed after what I learned during the semester.…

The revisions would be done by my peers, SI leader, and Dr. Moreno which was really helpful because they would help me improve my weaknesses. Furthermore, those weaknesses were I had many awkward sentences, not using academic vocabulary, and not adding much detail. I don’t consider to be the best writer in the world, neither to be the worst writer in the world. I have come about many strategies, learning process, and more techniques to become what is called a “better writer”. I did not think I needed to improve as a writer, I thought everything I wrote was great. This class has helped me improve my writing in more ways than I thought were possible. At the beginning of this school year, my approach to writing was, in a sense, incorrect, but I thought that the way I wrote my papers was completely fine.…
