Coastal Medical Center was founded after World War II using the Hill-Burton Act and by raising funds locally. From a modest beginning with 100 beds and a limited number of services offered, the medical center has grown significantly with 450 beds and now offers a full range of services. Much of CMC’s success can be given to former CEO Don Wilson. Serving from 1990 to 2008, Wilson was seen as visionary and was very helpful in transforming the medical center to its present status as a tertiary care facility offering high-intensity care services. The medical center raised $15.4 million during Wilson’s final year as CEO.
Following his retirement in 2008, Ron Henderson became Wilson’s successor. Henderson’s management style was more informal and

SWOT analyses have two major sections, internal and external. Internal includes strengths and weaknesses, while external includes opportunities and threats. Strengths are characteristics of a business or project that gives you an advantage over others and opportunities are elements that the project could use to its advantage. Both of these are helpful to an organization. Weaknesses are characteristics that place a business or project at a disadvantage relative to others and threats are elements in the environment that could cause trouble for the organization. In the past there was much success, but under new management the company slowly began to see failures occurring. Creating a sense of urgency galvanizes the team to action and creates the support of the overall organization for the evolutionary or radical changes that need to occur. The case stated there is no corporate strategy and no sense of direction. Mentioning these two factors means the organization needs to develop a mission and vision. Once they are in place and the goals have been defined, CMC can move forward with its planning process. Another step Coastal Medical Center must take to re-establish its reputation and organization is to create coaching and mentoring programs. Ensure that mentoring programs are integrated into your on-boarding efforts so new hires have a coach from day one.Another strategy can be to rebuild and re-engage execution support structure. Organizational structures are centers of excellence and play a critical role in ensuring that execution is supported by a culture of discipline and rigor.
