Strengths and weaknesses associated with your primary leadership style
In researching the strengths and weaknesses associated with authentic leadership, I could not locate any scholarly articles opposing this leadership style. Nonetheless, from a personal point of view, I believe even the best practices have some setbacks. As someone who is still in the infantry leadership level, I have noticed that being an authentic leader requires time and discipline more so than the other forms of leaderships as suggested by Avolio, Luthans and Walumbwa (2008):
Authentic Leaders are individuals who know who they are and what they think and are perceived by others as being aware of their own values, moral perspective, knowledge and strengths (p.4).
In order words, authentic leadership is grounded on increased self-consciousness of the individual; this state requires time. It is a process which involves painstaking evaluation, soul searching, honesty, and vulnerability. This style of leadership is not simply read and adopted unlike most leadership models. Another publication supporting the strength of authentic leadership reports that; “by enacting these behaviors authentic leaders facilitate higher levels of trust in management and promote active engagement of employees in workplace activities, which results in greater satisfaction and higher productivity” (Gardner et al. 2005, Walumbwa et al. 2008). This article also proposes that the authentic leader models behaviors which stimulates an enhanced work culture.
