There are stereotypes about individuals whose primary language is not English. Many like to judge those individuals harshly and unfairly. Society has played a huge part in the lives of individuals who have ‘limited’ English. Even though, there are many that do not talk or understand English properly yet they should still be treated fairly. Amy Tan and her mother relate to this stigma. People should not judge a book by its cover because you never know if that individual with ‘limited’ English can soon read, speak, and write similar to a native English person. There are those who like to underestimate people who do not know ‘proper’ English, however, there’s resources to help and improve their use of language. Based on those abilities it affect individuals in different ways. Such as, Amy Tan who had faced challenges to be a writer and Amy Tan’s mother Daisy who had a hard time in the hospital because doctor and nurses could not understand her. Amy Tan was born in Oakland,California, therefore, she is Chinese-American. In “Mother Tongue,” Any stated that she was made keenly aware of the different Englishes she used. She also said, “I do think the language spoken in the family, especially, in immigrant families which are more insular, plays a large role in shaping the language of the child.” Therefore, she believed that has influenced her achievement test, IQs and SAT scores. In school she did moderately well in math but in English she did not do well. She was told that she was going to be a doctor because of the math and science result. However, her English score it did not meet the standard. For that reason, when she went to college she enrolled as pre-med. Nonetheless, that did not stop …show more content…
For instance, in school the students takes a test to evaluate their English standard. Those who does not meet the standard the school provides them with ESL. ESL stands for English as a second language which is helpful for elementary, middle, and high school it gives extra help in improving their English. ESL has helped student in lots of ways. It gives support and challenge so that their English can improve. For example, extra reading activities, writing assignments, and learning new vocabulary. It’s that extra help, is that little push that is needed. For adults, there are free program that public schools provides. It is similar to what ESL students do. There are CDs and DVDs that are also useful . For the reasons, that you can listen what is being said which then you repeat. It holds conversations that is needed a response. Thus, it helps with the speaking part. Lastly, college students who did not do well in the reading and writing section they get put in a college writing class or/and mastering reading skills. Thusly, there are resources that can be used for individuals who are struggling with the English
