Leading an organization of 170 members was a difficult task in itself, but being handed the trust of the incoming freshmen, and having control over their first high school experience was intimidating. Never having led such a large group, it required a new dimension of leadership to make sure that the entire organization was always on board with the program’s aspirations of welcoming the freshmen to Stuyvesant’s vibrant community and guiding them throughout the year. I found myself having to be more assertive and organized. And although it was a sudden change from the more intimate style of leadership I was used to, it was thrilling to have such a great impact on my school’s community. I expanded the program to work more closely with the Student Union, introduced a one-on-one meeting system between the Big Sibs and the freshmen, and developed the Big Sib…

I am an ambitious, hard-working, and motivated individual with a strong attention to detail and a passion for leadership. During high school, I was always eager to be involved. I seized every opportunity I was given to be a leader. I was elected to student government, and even co-founded a DECA chapter at my school. At my graduation, where I delivered the Valedictorian Address, I was presented with the Harold Albrecht Leadership Award, which was given to recognize the many ways in which I have been a leader during high school.…

However, getting everyone in an organization to communicate well together can often be a difficult task to achieve. With the ever changing diversity within the workforce, people are often required to work with people who may be different than them and that may carry different views. This is why it is extremely important to build and enforce communication skills in the workplace. When two people have different outlooks, it is very common for the communication between the two to be vague or absent. As a child, I really enjoyed reading books, this may be because my mother and father would try to read to me each night before bed. One of my favorite bedtime stories would be Aesop 's fables, particularly the Tortoise and the Hare. Although the Hare was talented and had the ability to be a champion, his arrogance made him lose the race when he decided to sleep during the race because he thought his opponent was not good enough. To this day I personally resonate with the idea of the underdog overcoming any obstacles, and that is what the tortoise signifies. The tortoise understood that although he was not in the best position to win the race, he should not give up or not compete.…

Another well-documented approach to improving leadership competencies could be studied, though this organization may not have had the resources (time and personnel) to follow through. This would be to create and study a mentoring or coaching program for new managers. The organization had a preceptor program already, a person for new managers to ask questions, but that program focused on practical application questions (e.g., following processes, asking who to contact, finding forms). While that was useful, the literature review indicated that new managers derive more benefit from having a dedicated mentor or coach, a partner who was focused on the new manager’s continued self-development in leadership competencies.…

I was fortunate enough to attend the 2016 H. W. Sumners Leadership Conference where I would have the opportunity to meet a unique pool of influential individuals. Most of my leadership experiences had come from group projects with students who I were familiar with, and the conference gave me the chance to become a team with strangers from across the United States and Mexico. I was not aware of how much I was actually going to get out of the conference. Through the elective workshops, I learned much more about my leadership style and who I could become as a leader. Through the speakers, I learned about the power of creating a vision and pursuing with unyielding faith.…
