When steel being covered with zinc, zinc will corrode itself, therefore protecting the steel. But, because people didn’t cover Sydney Harbour Bridge in zinc, and the process of covering it, takes a lot of hard work and money, people came with another cheaper solution- painting it. Paint effectively ‘seals’ steel from the atmosphere, therefore, prevents it from corrosion. But there is 1 problem with this method- the sun’s light and weather affect the paint in negative way; additionally, it does not protect the exposed steel. This is why, paint layers always get replaced (people remove and repaint Sydney Harbour Bridge). Also, people always replace these layers, because old layers of paint were harmful to the environment.
