There are nine key focus areas, which can be loosely summarized as referring to an individual’s moral code, internal motivation, and commitment to self. The author’s self-assessment again revealed expert practice in seven of the nine areas. Ethics and morality are of high priority to this writer, and with that comes an unbiased appreciation for diversity. Additionally, an internal motivation exists in which this author strives to gain knowledge and impart it on those around her to improve both party’s understanding and potential. These characteristics are crucial to leadership, as they inspire trust. However, weaknesses exist in areas of nurturing oneself and maintaining balance. In these areas altruism prevails. After all, as practice evolves, so should one’s knowledge and competence. One of the ways that this writer intends to promote leadership growth is to achieve certification within the coming year in her field of practice, the operating room. CNOR certification is achieved through the Competency and Credentialing Institute and will serve to improve knowledge and understanding of practice standards, thereby increasing confidence, competence, and quality of workplace practices. Preparation for examination is estimated to take several months, and the exam is offered year-round. Furthermore, the active pursuit of professional certification illustrates accountability and provides credibility to an individual’s professional practice, as verified by accredited third party
