Strength and Vulnerability in One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest

Throughout his famous novel One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, Ken Kesey shows that power and vulnerability are largely subjective, and people often only have power because others think that they do. Chief Bromden’s unreliable narration depicts all kinds of power as physical size despite a character’s real size or physical ability. Nurse Ratched’s power over the rest of the characters, and McMurphy’s ability to resist it, shows that power is a matter of people’s perception as much as anything else.

This ties in to a larger delusion involving a vast network that he calls ‘The Combine’, who are in control of almost everything and everyone. "She 'll go on winning, just like the Combine, because she has all the power of the Combine behind her.” One of Chief’s most vivid and frequent hallucinations regards his perception of people’s power and people in power. Chief sees people who have power as physically strong, and large –the more power they have, the larger he sees them. Chief sees personal strength as physical strength and power over others as physical size. “And the hand on that arm the black boy was holding began to swell up… pumping bigger and bigger as he clenched and unclenched it. I was the only one who saw it. I saw it swell and clench shut, flow in front of my eyes, become smooth, hard. A big rusty iron ball at the end of a chain.” (Page 47) in this excerpt, Pete Bancini stands up to the orderlies and hospital administrators for the first time in years, and Chief sees his strength and defiance as physical power. She isn’t particularly strong physically, but the patients are intimidated by her and scared of her, much more so than they are of any of the other doctors and nurses, despite them having just as much authority. Big Nurse’s power comes from her tight control over both the ward and her own emotions. She puts up a façade of care and concern for the patients on her ward, but it can easily be argued that she only cares about the system and routine of the ward running smoothly. She has been known to overuse (or even abuse) her power in order to keep to the peaceful routine of life on the ward. One notable example of this is her treatment of Mr. Taber, a former patient of the ward. When Mr. Taber disrupts the peaceful routine by refusing to take his medication, or at least wanting to know what’s in it, Big Nurse first lets him go without taking the medication, in order to not make a spectacle of direct confrontation, and then later has him held down and performs an invasive and unnecessary spinal tap and then electro-shock therapy on him. (Pages 30-33) This event shows both kinds of power that the Nurse has. She manages to hold back her anger at Taber for disrupting her ward, showing her self-control; then she uses her position and the authority it grants her to have the orderlies assist her with the spinal tap and doctors assist her with the electro-shock

The weak, powerless, and vulnerable are all types of people society creates through the act of self destruction. The idea of society causing a person’s own self destruction is contradictory, however it is a main theme in Ken Kesey’s One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. In the novel, patients are admitted to a psychiatric ward when they stray away from following social norms, not because they are sick. The ward is run by Nurse Ratched, a controlling woman who is ironically all about manipulation instead of rehabilitation.…

"Orwellian" is a term used to describe a situation, idea, or societal condition that George Orwell identified as being destructive to the welfare of a free and open society. Through the comparative study of George Orwell’s prose fiction Novel “1984” and Fritz Lang’s German expressionist film “Metropolis” it is demonstrated that the reign of Totalitarian governments and technology has the power to over-run and remove civil liberties. These two composers similarly share the ethics for which society has the freedoms of individuality and free will. In context, Lang reflects the anxieties of the Weimar Republic of Germany, under the stresses following the First World War, highlighting the consequences of rapid industrialisation and the subsequent…

In the short story, The Man Who was Almost a Man, the author, Richard Wright, demonstrates the theme of craving and wanting power in an extraordinary way. Power can be interrupted in many different ways, as was seen in the story. Although, a lot of times people end up mistaking power, for respect. In addition to that, even though power and respect require similar qualities, they are very different. In the short story, the main character, Dave Sanders expressed that some people create a life of searching for power, and holding the the title of respect and establishment.…

This quote clearly shows Chief's feelings toward the Combine. Chief realistically believes that people at the hospital are delusional in that success for them is conforming to Nurse Ratched's authority. Success for him is to stay independent from the authority. By pretending to be deaf and unintelligent, Chief is ignored by his fellow companions living in the hospital. This failure, however, creates a sense of individuality for him to stay away from…

The treatment of mental patients has greatly improved since the 1960s, but it still is not perfect. One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest is a novel written by Ken Kesey and published in 1962. Chief Bromden, a schizophrenic patient in an insane asylum who pretends to be dumb and deaf to avoid confrontation, narrates what happens in the ward. When authority hating Randle McMurphy is committed to the ward, he notices the head nurse, Nurse Ratched, manipulates her patients to keep her authority, rather than actually benefit the patients. Nurse Ratched clearly mistreats her patients and gives them unnecessary treatments.…

In Ken Kesey’s One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, he explores the topic of how an individual's ability for self-sacrifice will be portrayed when presented with a compelling circumstance. One character he focuses this main idea upon is Randle Patrick McMurphy. McMurphy demonstrates multiple acts of self-sacrifice when he is presented with something he would prefer rather than what he is given. One with a high capacity for self-sacrifice will tend to be deceived when faced with compelling circumstances and their consequences. During the first couple of weeks that McMurphy is at the institute, he is deceived by the compelling luxury of the hospital that made him request to transfer there to complete his sentence, instead of completing it at a…

Chambliss describes the common themes he found during his decade-long observations of Nurses and Doctors in Hospitals around the USA and other countries. The primary focus is how nurses, to avoid chaos, routinize work that to outsiders would find disgusting and horrifying but, at the same time, struggle to sustain a sense of caring and patient-oriented responsibility. Chambliss describes four ways that nurses deal with the pressures of their job, and although every hospital and ward deal with different emergencies the social order and the organization's dynamics remain constant. First, nurses and members of the staff keep outsiders out, which they use to protect staff from outside interference. For instance, Chambliss mentions nurses restrictions on visiting hours to help patients but also to keep visitors out of the nurse's way, prevent too many obstructive questions, and most importantly keep visitors from seeing the messy and often tragic incidents that are happening daily.…

According to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, power is defined as the ability to control people or things. Not only can one understand the meaning of power in his or her own society, but she can understand the meaning of power through literature. The idea of power is explored in Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s short story “The Yellow Wallpaper.” Written in 1892, “The Yellow Wallpaper” is a fictional story that shows a young woman’s rise to power. Although the narrator is not given a name, Gilman shows how this woman gains power by the end of the story.…

Chief’s disorder did not have an impact on those around him. This is because he lived in a mental ward where everyone has a disorder, some much worse than his condition. I believe this is realistic because in a mental hospital one’s mental illness will not really bother or cause distress to those around you because they too are suffering. I believe if this story took place in a normal society, his disorder would impact others around him, especially family members and those close to him who must help him.…

As the book progresses, it is evident that he has set this selfishness aside to act on the behalf of the other patients as he sees their restoration of manhood to be more of a priority. This action is not the action of a person who suffers from “madness”. Even the Big Nurse realizes her inability to control him and understands that he is not seriously deranged. Despite this fact, she remains devious in her plans to force him to submit to her will. It is therefore an interesting side note throughout the novel plot to observe her delusional and eccentric behavior to force the submission.…

1.There are multiple mental illnesses portrayed in One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest as the setting for the story is a mental institution. The narrator is a large Native American who feigns deaf and dumbness. This character is an excellent study in the evolution of a mentally ill individual along the path of finding a semblance of normalcy, although the phenomenon is the result of interactions with a decidedly psychopathic or sociopathic man, McMurphy, played by Jack Nicholson. Nicholson connives to be placed in a mental institution to avoid jail and throughout his antics we are offered an internal view of a form of mental illness more difficult to diagnose - psycho &/or sociopathy. The terms have been used interchangeably and even experts disagree…
