Effective Communication Skills In The Workplace

Superior Essays
Effective communication skills are one of the key components for social worker’s job because these skills help social workers effectively obtain and convey information with participants. In order to develop these skills, I need to understand my communication style, so that I can build up my strengths, and I can learn how to overcome some challenging areas in my communication.
Strengths
I consider myself as a good listener. I often pay attention with others, and I trend to spend more time listening than talking. I don’t like to interrupt others to challenge what they saying, rather than I try to wait until all information is presented before adding opinions. However, it is challenge for me to listen effectively all the time, especially during

Body movement:
I observed that my classmates trend to sit in the back of the classroom during midterm exam. Most of them the first thing they do was taking out their notes and try to do the final review. They looked nervous for the exam with less talking or smiling, and so did I. I often scratched my head during that exam since I did not prepare well.
Appearance:
I know how to dress based on the activities’ contents. I choose formal clothing for interviews, conferences, and funerals. In China, family members of the dead wear white, whereas friends, relatives and others wear black in the funeral. I also notice that when my sister wears makeup and a dress on Sunday, she will be the receptionist at the

For example, when people ask me for direction, I spend more time to tell them verbally than show them the pictures. Sometime, I just walk with them to the destination if it is not too far. I have learned that language reflects attitudes. I found that my daylily conversations involve powerless languages, such as hesitations. I use words “uh” “well” “er” unconsciously when talk others regarding some unfamiliar topics. Since I English is my second language, sometimes I have hard time to explain complex ideas in English. I often pause to think carefully about the words I use, but sometime cannot find a proper word. People always ask me to explain more. That is why I don’t like public speaking. In addition, I am not good at using slang or jargon. Although I text a lot, I like to type a full sentence. I don’t like to skip punctuations in texting. When I talk with my sister, I use abstract request a lot, such as “Put back your shoes” and “unplug the Microwave after using it.” Because I usually clean up our room, I become boss my sister around when she a mess at

Ahead of me is alot of work to do to get them out of my vocabulary especially when speaking in public. They are um and yeah. When I lose my train of thought or searching for the right words, I tend to say those words to stretch the time and to avoid the ackward silence. I do not have a tip of how to stop, I feel the more I speak, the more comfortable I have become so those words are being said a little lesser each time. Another issue that makes me nervous, the fear of being asked a question that I would not know the answer to.…

I have a couple of sentence errors that I need to work on, but that’s due to me not reading my paper out loud to myself. Another weakness that I will continue to work on are fragments. I always think I have defeated fragments, but they always seem to appear. I am still working on it, and it will get better. Another one of my weakness is my internal citations in MLA, but that probably has to do that I have written most APA paper that I am just accustomed to citing in APA and not MLA.…

The words become fuzzy, therefore, I have a hard time focusing reading, I start to stumble and I get so nervous that I start to read louder in order to focus on the words. Such a degrading experience…mostly because I feel people correlate it with my intelligence. Funny note is that when reading myself and though I have a hard time comprehending what I am reading; I can read fluently. Also, I am the last one to volunteer to write on the whiteboard as a result of my inability to spell words correctly (thank God for auto check!). All these things limit me from growing academically, though I have made it this far (somethings I wonder how) they are ever present, even more so now participating in a small cohort…

My greatest weaknesses are my communication and public speaking skills. Because of the fact that English is my second language, I have some issues with articulating my English clearly for people to understand me. This is clearly a weakness because sometimes it restricts my ability to communicate my ideas and thoughts efficiently. To illustrate more, during my last coop as an internal control at Vertex Pharmaceuticals, I had difficulties sometimes to contribute to my team meetings because I feared that I won't be understood clearly when talking. In addition, when I had to do presentations for my department, I used to panic and have anxiety although I have a well-written speech.…

Upon completing interview one and two, I surmise that interviewing is not as easy as it appears. Whether it be asking questions to a stranger, friend, or a family member, there are still levels of discomfort because my role changes. I am no longer their friend who can talk in a causal manner, I have to contemplate and decide what questions to ask and how to prevent boundary violations. With friends and family, I often do not perceive this and conversations are more lenient. It was difficult to provide reflection without sounding hypercritical or appearing apathetic.…

I still use commas in a manner that might be helpful when I am writing fiction, and even though I know better, I am often lured to “misuse” commas even in my formal writing. I think it is important for students not only to know mechanics, grammar, and spelling so that my students never encounter the frustration of a perfectly good idea scuttled by the reader’s inability to puzzle out the code. But more importantly, I want for them to know why these conventions exist, and to be honestly told that sometimes, there isn’t any reason! It’s easier for students to learn if they know a bit of the history and habitus of the oddities that they are expected to…

However, this pessimism needs to be well managed, lest it turns into paranoia. It is also a problem when it comes to group work as some people may feel offended when I overly point out imperfections in their opinions and ideas. Another weakness is communication. I am able to absorb and understand information quite readily but I face difficulty when it comes to communicating such information to my peers. Many times it seems as though we are on a different wavelength and it is vexing for both parties as I cannot express what I want to say and the other party cannot understand what I am trying to say.…

A lot of people get mad at me because they know that I’m not that big of a talker, to me it’s just a simple “Hey, What’s Up”? That’s all what else are we talking for. But as I am writing this, I am realizing that when people say that I need to speak up more or talk louder, it’s simply because I’m not a talker. Speaking up and money is a must and a need in order to get through everyday life, But if I don’t start talking more, I will be in a heap of trouble. I wish there was another way of…

However, most students, especially English language learners, still have low ability in speed reading. They find it difficult to read faster, particularly for skimming. It is hard for them to read the text in a rapid way while obtaining general ideas of the text they have read. Moreover, since English is not their native language, speed reading becomes more difficult for them to do. This can lead them to have bad performance in doing assignments and on reading test such as mid-term or final semester examination and TOEFL…

I also have noticed repetitiveness and slight disorganization in the way that similar thoughts are sometimes split up throughout the essay. Another issue I have observed is my inability to keep my writing short and to the point. I can be very wordy. Often I will write too similar to how I speak and think and it becomes lengthy. My peers have pointed this out when I would share writing pieces with them in past classes.…
