b. Blanche's obsession with appearance represents the "Old South" by her trying to relive the past and reestablish her glamour of her youthful days. Her looks and image during the "Old South" gave her a social standing and now she is realizing that as she gets older.

Stella is in a difficult situation where she is stuck in between the Old South and the New South, between Blanche and Stanley. Stella have to basically choose between her sister and her husband. By making this difficult decision Stella sides with her husband. I do not agree with her actions at the end of the play, when she have Blanche committed to a mental institution and choosing to continue living with Stanley when they both committed wrong acts. This situation is not only one sided and Stella should have decided to part ways from them both.
5. Desire has led Blanche's downfall causing her to be in this place in her life where she feels alone and unloved. The two instances of "desire" in the play that have led to her demise are when she purses young men to try to recapture the love she once had with Allan when they were younger. Also, when she is having these encounters with younger men she feels younger and loved. Another, point in the play is how she turn to strangers.
