Many school have rejected street smarts as an intellectual idea. As Ned Laff put it "is not simply to exploit students' nonacademic interests, but get those interest through academic eye."(p.269) Gerald Graff believes street smarts can benefit intellectually. The particular appeals that advertisers use to sell me certain products is intellectualism. The product can make me part of communities. Being part of these communities I learn others point of view of the products. I can also make arguments about the product. I read manga (graphic novels) and discuss it with my friends. Like Graff I was able to be part of a community, outside of friends and family. I benefited socially form buying it. Advertisers would use the allure of friendship and/or communities.
Graff would argue in his community about which player was the best of sports magazines. I would argue in his community about which character was the strongest in manga's. Because there are a verity of player and character in both magazines and manga, it is simple to start an argument about one in communities. Advertisers benefit form the argument in communities.
