Street Racing Research Paper

It’s a late friday night and you meet up with friends for a quick race. The roar of the engines arouses excitement as everyone lines up at the starting point. The girl flags go and you take off. Your in the lead hitting an amazing 110 mile per hour. You drift around a turn to look up and see a mini van with a family coming back from a night out in front of you and you can’t stop. Street racing originated in California after world war two when G.I’s working on airplanes and jeep engines began working on their own cars (Angel Fire). Street racing is and unsancioned or illegal form of motor sports on public roads(Streetracers.com). There are two types of racing: street racing and drag racing. Drag racing takes place on designated tracks. With these races there are multiple terminologies used; such as a 40 roll or quarter mile. When mobvies like The Fast and Furious came out, it publicized street racing and glamourized it. Since then it has become popular all around the country and around the world. In the state of Pennsylvania alone there is a task force targeted towards racers (Iterview). When a person is caught street he or she can get multiple fines or face jail time. In Pennsylvania if one is caught with illegal modifications to his or her car he or she will be facing jail time.
To avoid possible jail time and fines, there are alternatives to street racing. Drag racing is racing on race tracks and are safer because it is in a controlled enviroment. Allowing people to race on tracks satisfiys they “need for speed” and keeps innocent people safe on public roads. In some states certificates are being issued for owners to use their illegally modified cars on the tracks(Streetracer.com). With some states allowing this, cops are allowing owners of illegally modified cars to be hooked up to trailer but they are not allowed to be driven on the road
