Street Gangs
Street gangs have created a great impact on neighborhoods, communities and especially to family members. All family members that have a relationship with gang members become target for any rival gang. Rival gangs would kill anyone who gets on their way. The fear and danger that their families have live with for the rest of their lives. Street gangs play a big role in minorities, low income families, schools and law official. The low-income community’s members are profile by gangs by the elected official and law enforcement. Why the labels on gangs and what are they connected to? Parents have no choice but to move into these neigh hoods. Exposing their children to violence and crime around their kids “Watts fed into one of the largest industrial…. and almost endless sea of cheap labor” (Walter Mosley page 17). Most of the times these families do are to leave their kids with an elderly person such a grandmother or neighbor to oversee their kids while the parents are working. A very high percentage of families are single mothers with their husband in jail or abandons have left their homes. In low income communities people learn to mine their own business. Being born into this type of life style you become accustom to those surrounding “residents may simply accept the gangs as part of their neighborhood life” (web ebsco.com/streetgangs, Scott H. Decker). To some residents having gangs in their neighborhood can be beneficial because they can buy their stolen properties or illegal drugs. The police department is putting more police car patrolling in those neighborhoods in order to reduce all crimes. As a community member I have seen more cars patrolling in the area and they are making arrest, but never the head of the organization. Even though things do not seem to change when you pass by those neighborhoods you will be see kids selling or buying drugs from drug dealers. The police are making arrest but they are only arresting the young ones that are starting to become dealers. They should focus more drugs dealers who are enforcing violence, crimes to the kids. “The youths who join gangs for a sense of belonging; status; new and exciting experiences; access to drugs and alcohol; and monetary”(www.ebsco.com article street gangs). As members of a community you have to come together and provide for our kids all the essentials of life and are not just food, shelter and clothe. If you provide love, understanding and a sense of security most of all stability, not leave your kids alone for too long. Be there for them show that you care and that they are all you
