“Ambition is the first step to success. The second step is action.” In the Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin and Straws Into Gold by Sandra Cisneros, they are “ambitious of obtaining,” the success they work for (Franklin 6). In Comparison, they strive to be the best and go against the normality of their times to achieve success. There is also contrasting parts in the two passages involving how Franklin depends on others to reach success whereas Cisneros is independent.
Both Franklin and Cisneros strive to be the best they could. They did everything they could to be on the top. Franklin states, “Tho’ I never arrived at perfection I had been so ambitious of obtaining, but fell short it, yet I was a better and a happier man,”(Franklin 6) to show how he gives it his all to be perfect and though he does not reach his goal, he is still proud of himself. Cisneros also states,” I’ve done all kinds of things I did not think I could do since then,” showing the result of her determination of being successful. Cisneros never gets discouraged on her journey to success. Though they both faced hard ships and struggles, they both strived continually to get better. There is major determination shown throughout both Franklin’s and Cisneros’s passage on reaching success. Also, Franklin and Cisneros go against the normality of their times.

Franklin depends on others to get to his success. For example, without his friend Collin, he will never have the chance to able to start his journey. On the other hand though, Cisneros is independent on reaching her success. “I’ve managed to do a lot of things in my life I didn’t think I was capable of and which many others didn’t think I was capable of either,”(Cisneros 1) Cisneros says this to show how she works independently to get somewhere no one thinks she could get.
