Strawberry Monologue

I woke up to birds chirping in the wonderful sunny sky. I strolled outside onto the beautiful Mississippi breeze. ¨Bye ma, we are headin´ out to Strawberry , be back in a few.¨ We just left the house to go to sell goods with our wagon, a few miles away at Strawberry. Mama can't come because she sick. I think after we sell, we will just pick up some groceries from the Mr. Barnett´s shop and head on back. The boys are so annoying when we go out to Strawberry. They always want something extra.
¨Lillian, can you gather up the goods to sell?¨ ¨sure thing, papa.¨ .

We finally arrived at the shops and we all figured that we would say hi to Mr. Barnett. ¨Hey Mr. Barnett, How are you doin´ today?¨ ¨It's a bit busy, but otherwise good Miz Lillian Jean.¨ happily said

I turn around and started arguing with this random kid, demanding an apology! I´m so fierce I don't even know what to do right. My brother Jeremy steps in and tries to stop the fighting, but both of us ignore him. You know what, if this little black folk doesn´t know how to walk on the sidewalk, then he should not be on the sidewalk. My dad grabbed his arm, twisted it, then threw him off the sidewalk and onto the road. Everybody was staring at the action that just had occurred, dead silent. Everyone had stopped what they were doing. The family that was with the black kid were in shock, they didn't know what to do. I noticed that there was no father in the area of the little kid, strange. The little boy got up and I started demanding an apology right away. I was still standing there waiting for the apology since he just ran straight into me like he meant to do it or something. Finally, the little boy apologised to me and my family for that rude interruption. The mother also apologized, she really needs to figure out how to control her kid. We went back to our wagon to head

It used to be that children were taught to toughen up, to grow a thicker skin, to take everything with a grain of salt and that it is what is. If someone hurt a someone else’s feelings, they should suck it up and deal with it or fix it themselves. Rarely did parent get involved, unless the issue was serious of course, because as kids we were expected to rough it out ourselves and learn how to healthily disagree. My parents and grandparents were taught this way and so were my sister and I. It was understood that things weren’t always going to go our way and that that was okay, and it wasn’t ok to be rude or make a scene because we didn’t like something, we were expected to deal with it and make it as palatable for ourselves as possible without…

Just like in the example I shared, we had to reinforce the way in which my brother was acting because it was so far from acceptable. We are all human; it is perfectly normal for us to be upset sometimes. There are times in which things don’t go our way and it is unfortunate. Regardless of how we feel, aggression is never the answer.…
