Weakley, Christian Thomas, Erica Language Arts, Period 2 04/15/2024 Memory of Isidor Straus Isidor Straus, an important and well known American figure, businessman, and philanthropist, known for his joint ownership of Macy’s department store, funding a variety of organizations, educational programs, healthcare, and more specifically for being one of the lost souls who passed away on the RMS Titanic in 1912. Straus’s life started in Otterberg, Germany, on February 6th, 1845. He spent the first years of his life as a normal, German child attending school and helping the family. Only a few years later, he decided to marry Ida Blun, the woman he’d be with for the rest of his life. Some time later, he would become a partner for R.H. Macy & Co, which is now known as Macy’s department store, a large business widely seen throughout the United States Territories. After bringing success and contribution to the company, he joined the table and became a joint owner, which landed him in his $140,000,000 (modern currency evaluation) fortune. With the overflow of money he acquired, he then proceeded to fund the Straus foundation which funded and positively contributed to world issues, charitable organizations, education, healthcare, and Jewish organizations. In 1912, Straus and his wife, Ida, purchased tickets to voyage on the Titanic from Europe to the United States, to come back from what was assumed as to be a business trip. The Straus family business was heavily involved in the world economy, which meant they would need to visit and travel quite frequently for sourcing needs, negotiating deals, and expanding their business, which led them to returning on the Titanic from
