Children with cerebral palsy are said to require diverse supports and interventions in order to be active participant in their own education (national library of medicine, 2016). Differentiated instruction is a set of strategies that teachers can use to meet each child where they are when they enter their class and help to move them forward as far as possible academically (Levy, 2008). Differentiated instruction, from my own experience has been a successful approach used to help meet the needs of the diverse learners with cerebral palsy. The differentiated instructional approach is said to require teachers to take the time to learn about their students, how they communicate, learn, their interests, their family life and so much more. Differentiated instruction is a way of recognizing and teaching according to different student talents and learning styles of each individual students in the classroom (Morgan, 2014). According to Case-Smith, Frolek Clark & Schlabach, occupational therapy is said to be the primary intervention for children with cerebral palsy (2013, 416). There are several different treatment options and they may include scheduled physical therapy, occupational therapy and speech therapy; the use of medications to control seizures, relax muscle spasms, and alleviate pain; there are many different types of surgery available to correct anatomical abnormalities or release tight muscles; the child may use braces and other orthotic devices to help improve muscle strength; a wheelchair or a rolling walkers to increase independence; and using assistive technology devices such as communication devices to help these children communicate (national institute of neurological disorders & stroke,
