The strategic planning process develops and analyzes guidelines for an organization and its employees. Senior leadership and the human resource management (HRM) should work cohesively to develop a plan free of legal implications. Managers who use motivational concepts encourage old and new employees to work at a higher level to reach an organization’s goals.
Whether a civilian company, large or small or a branch of the military, each organization should develop a strategic plan for employees to follow. In the strategic planning process, leaders develop the organization’s mission, vision, and core values statements as well as define the long-, medium-, and short-term goals (U.S. Coast Guard Leadership Development Center, 2006). Large organizations may construct a strategic plan for the entire organization while tasking branches of the company to fabricate a strategic plan that parallels the organization’s plan, but meets the needs of the division. As a result, each subdivision is ready to achieve the assigned duties by planning for the future.
Strategic Planning Process Steps
The strategic planning process consists of five stages: pre-planning; environmental scanning; formulating a strategy; implementing the strategy; and evaluating the strategy, which includes making necessary adjustments (Reed & Bogardus, 2012, pg. 111).
