Going through life you always hear that you can do anything that you set your mind to. This statement is very encouraging for people, especially if they find themselves in a difficult time in their life. It gives them hope that better times will come and the time that you spent suffering will be worth it. You not only hear that, you try and use it for encouragement if you are the one trying to cheer someone up or get them through a rough patch in their life. This seems to be true in Thousand and One Nights that we read during the semester. Shahrazad used her storytelling to try and control how her life ended up. When you figure out that a book is being written about Harold Crick’s life and the author is trying to figure out how he is going to die, you know that things are not going to end well for him. It seemed as though he had no control over what happened to him and seemingly no matter what he done his life was going to end tragically. This is when outside forces is not a good thing, because it was the author writing the book that was going to cause Harold to die a tragic death. On the other hand, once Harold found out that his life was being made into a book he tried to control how his life turned out, similar to what Shahrazad done. He done everything in his power to find out who was narrator his life. Once he found the author of the book, he began talking to her and trying to get her to change her mind about how his life is going to turn out. When you see that the bus hit him at the bus stop when he was saving that little boy, you think that he is not going to die. When you find out that he did not die, it makes you happen inside to know that he saved the little boy, but did not lose his life in the process. When you find this out you know think that Harold did have control of his life and that the outside forces are bad, but he defeated
