Strange fruit is a Grammy Hall of Fame song written as a poem by school teacher Abel Meeropol, but made famous by Billie Holiday in 1939. It is regarded by some as the first civil rights protest song, as a matter of fact Leonard Feather, the jazz pianist, called "Strange Fruit" "the first significant protest in words and music, the first unmuted cry against racism." Strange fruit was the song that brought the cruelty of lynching’s to the attention of people who had not noticed, even now it is one song used by television when referring to the cruelty pre civil rights.
