Ryan hated Sam Abernathy, but then he started to change his feelings and actually started liking him at the end. Ryan was very affected by joey’s death in the beginning. He wasn 't able to say all the things that were happening to him because of it, but in the end, he was able to think for himself and get help with the school therapist. I could relate to how Ryan handled Joey’s death because a couple of years ago I found out that my Aunt had died in Kakuma. I was close to her.…
Nathan Thomas a 21-year-old white male is a resident of Houston, Texas. He was born in a very strict and religious Baptist home, whose parents lived by strong religious values. His family was very popular among the community. His father a well-known politician and his mother a well-known doctor, were considered the elite in Texas. Thus, when his father became mayor of Houston, he kept secrets from his family in regards to his sexual orientation to uphold his family’s name.…
Within The Sun Also Rises and The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber, Hemingway utilizes masculinity as an important role. Throughout both stories, masculinity is portrayed as being a quality desired by the male characters. Similar to most males today, all four men in The Sun Also Rises desire being depicted as “masculine.” Unfortunately, these male characters possess other qualities that prevent them from feeling masculine. Because of this, the males strive to represent masculinity.…
Janet R. Jakobsen’s essay, Queers Are Like Jews, Aren’t They? Analogy and Alliance Politics, discusses in depth what it means to queer something and to do Jewish. Jakobsen explains the relationship between these two actions and encourages the process of “thinking through the possibilities of playing off multiple norms” (p 82). She is able to do this with the help of a reading by Stacy Wolf on Barbara Streisand’s queer performances. I will look closely at Jakobsen’s argument about Barbara Streisand’s nose and her decision not to change it, while also specifying Jakobsen’s interpretation of how Streisand differs from Sander Gilman’s account of “The Jewish Nose.”…
In Guyland: The Perilous World Where Boys Become Men, author Michael Kimmel attempts to map the passage of adolescence to adulthood for the young American male. At one point in time the transition from boyhood to manhood seemed clear cut and well defined. Men were quicker to become engaged, marry, start a family, and begin “Preparing for futures as civic leaders and Little League dads,” (Kimmel 19). Today however, guys must navigate a new stage of development, an undefined time span of extended adolescence during the transition from boy to man or simply referred to as “Guyland.” The author, Jimmy Kimmel, investigates a series of challenges and obstacles that face young American men as they traverse this newfound territory.…
On the surface Baldwin’s novel appears to be about sexuality, but the novel tackles a deeper issue. Baldwin takes a stance on finding oneself whether that be thought others or in moments of solitude. Geovanni is able to show David who he wants to become as well as warn him of what he could be. David faces an internal conflict discovering who he is independently from the people that surround him. The novel is less about sexuality and more about self-discovery.…
Growing up in the latter part of Sullivan’s generation, I can relate to and agree to the majority of his perspectives of what is a homosexual. None the less, I can also relate to the evolving perspectives of homosexuality in today’s generation. Raising a homosexual child in today’s society has provided me with an updated insight into the ever changing homosexual culture. The combination of my experiences, as well as the accompanied sources, has provided me with an understanding of both perspectives represented within the materials. In relation to Sullivan’s excerpt, What is a Homosexual, I was able to make a connection to the topics of nature versus nature as well as how individuals learn to come to terms at a young age with their homosexuality.…
Gender roles and performance are often the first visual cues many people have when meeting another person. This seems to have been a primary concern for many young gay men in Lawrence and Ames. Members of society discovering they are queer based on their appearance and mannerisms. In Lawrence a young gay man wrote a coming-out story in the Vortex that discussed his struggle not only with homosexuality but with his effeminacy. He said for many people it was his rejection of masculinity that was the hardest to grasp.…
The AIDS epidemic was a languid, merciless, killer that claimed the lives of millions in its wake. Often times, the people’s desperate search for a cure was referred to as “The War Against AIDS.” This War eventually was won in the sense that HIV no longer had the powerful to sentence so many people to death. However, it was still a sentence, but this time it was a sentence to a forced life style change. This struggle of AIDS and HIV was depicted in the autobiography Body Counts by Sean Strub.…
the lens of a white male. My own view is that the one token person of color, Belize, does not begin to address the issue of ethnic representation in Angels in America as it relates to a diverse and inclusive cast of characters. Furthermore, in Bill Stanford Pincheon's article BLACK AND QUEER VISUAL CULTURE: An Annotated Filmography and Reference Guide argues that: Many in the professional field are unaware that Black lesbians and gay men have created a substantial body of work in film and video.…
A young man sees the look of disgust as his father reads aloud from the newspaper about two men getting married in a town nearby. The young man takes this look and internalizes it creating a single elementary thought, “being gay is wrong.” This young man has just been socialized just as his father was before him, and his father’s father was before both of them. The process continues until, alas, the young man’s daughter reveals that she is a lesbian. The man is perplexed; all of his life he has been taught, and has taught others, how to look at life through the eyes of one basic thought, “being gay is wrong.”…
“Hey that’s so gay” or “you’re a fag”, is something you hear at a high school almost every day. Growing up in the North Carolina, homosexuality was sort of frond upon. Hearing people make gay jokes and look down on them everyday sort of imprinted “being gay is bad” into your head. Geryon, a gay, red monster living with normal people, goes through the struggle of a typical homosexual, acceptance. He goes through the ups and downs and struggles with his family, friends and community.…
Carl Wittman's an L.G.B.T Activist wrote in his book A Gay Manifesto, " To be free we must govern ourselves, set up our own organizations, protect ourselves" (Wittman, 75). The quote establishes the goals that many of the people from the gay community wanted in their lives. Many of these gay people wanted the same right that heterosexual people had. The Stonewall riots proved to not just gays but all people that enough time had passed. They wanted equal rights it was going to be in everyone lives not just one sexual orientation.…
