Keita: Heritage of the Griot is a historical fiction that takes place in the geographical location of Africa. The film focuses on a storyteller who aims to deliver ancestral heritage to Mabo Keita (the young boy). The storyteller, whose name is Djeliba captures Mabo’s attention by discussing the origins of his name and significance of the country's history (Kouyaté). The conflicts in this film were twofold; the rejection of non-western history by Africans and Mande King’s first wife whom has a difficult time dealing with Sundiata replacing her son for the King’s throne; revealing other African values. Conflicts in Miseducation.…
I am known for the "American System" and known as the "Great Compromiser," however I have accomplished and been through so much more than that. Born in 1777 in Hanover County, Virginia, I was exposed to American history since I was young. In 1797, I moved to Kentucky along with many others wanting to pursue careers in law and politics. My political career began in 1803 when I was elected to the Kentucky General Assembly then appointed to the U.S. Senate in 1806. I was Secretary of State under John Quincy Adams.…
Perpetual Rebellion Throughout humanity existence, there has always been slavery. It’s where a person of high society oppress and abuses an individual that is part of the “barbaric“ class. Notable mention to such abuse was during the colonial years. At the time, the Europeans or high society, would use slavery and utilize the indigenous people and the African as slaves. However, these slaves would rebel against their white masters.…
The Things They Carried is a fictional nonfiction book, because of one of Tim’s interesting storytelling techniques. In this book Tim does many interesting things with his storytelling. He talks about the different kinds of truths in stories. He is mysterious at times. He also talks about how you can screw up a story.…
In reading “Heroism and history”, I learned a lot about how why war occurs and why we talk about it so much. For example the author quotes,“It forced upon the reluctant sensibility of europe a recognition that the greeks, the romans and ourselves shared a common parentage with baboons, gorillas and chimpanzees.” The author here is trying to explain that there is a relationship between humans and animals in that they share common characteristics. In the text he talked about how one of the developed aspects/characteristics from animals that we received was human aggression. Just as animals have aggression in their everyday life, so do human beings.…
Chimamanda Adichie’s Ted Talk entitled “The Danger of a Single Story” could be a second name for the class African Women Writers. Adichie discusses growing up in post-colonial Africa and how there were still a lot of colonial influencers, especially on her education. She read and subsequently wrote books about little blonde girls with blue eyes, who ate apples and played in the snow. She then goes on to talk about how she personally could relate with none of these experiences, she ate mangos, did not have blonde hair or blue eyes and had never seen snow. Eventually, she found African writers and she began to read stories that were like her own, and she says it “saved her from having a single story.”…
History’s heroes are depicted as people who are strong, dominating, physically appealing, and courageous. Heroes saved their country and conquered their enemies against all odds. When Isaiah prophesied about a messiah, the hero he was describing profoundly contrasted whom the nation of Israel would have thought to be their conqueror. This messiah he wrote about was described as neither physically captivating nor a warrior. He would be a man who was innocently slaughtered like a lamb, a man who would die and rise again.…
Stories have been a part of human culture since before time. Storytellers generation after generation create a picture in our heads as they tell their stories. As any story is told, there can always be a second point of view. Looking at something from another standpoint can help explain the story or situation, and it fill gaps in the facts. In the past, a similar case has can be found in Africa during the mid-1900’s.…
An outrageously funny and humorous account of history's unknown stories, reading this book is like sitting is a roller coaster with your weirdest and funniest friends. Milton’s work contains depictions of valorous heroism, ghastly crimes, oddities of human society and other eye popping stories that will even amaze well-read historians. With an assortment of stories ranging from a pair of lovers who try to poison the woman’s husband, a soldier’s insistent fighting of World War II, a drunken baker on the Titanic surviving the cold North Atlantic water and many more this is easily the funniest collection of non-fiction I have read in a long time! Milton seems like a lover of trivia and history.…
This can date all the way back to the Mali empire in the 1300’s. “Griots and Storytellers” (Duckers). The singers of the Mali empire were known as Griots, and they functioned in West African societies as: storyteller’s, musicians, and historians. Griots would usually work for the richer class members and they work at any moment they are called upon. The Griots and Griottes (girl Griots) had to have some of the best memories in all of West Africa.…
As my grandfather took up the oboe in his childhood, he found that he had passion for music. This radiated around him and brought joy to others. After a stretched and forever-going rehearsal, he was offered to enroll in a conducting class. Without hesitation, he accepted. He practiced for hours and hours, studying the scores of V. Williams all the way to Pre-Baroque.…
History Within Stories Imagine world without the knowledge and understandings of cultures and their past history. World literature has helped shaped us into who we are today by helping us grip and understand cultures and their beliefs. It also helped us gather their information and how they lived by the recordings of these stories. It records the past, which has inspired us to express ourselves in many ways.…
Our Story takes place in an laboratory in a big city where a group of lab workers was testing if people would like older games better than newer games. While they were working one of the people in the line sneakily went out of the line and started messing with the lab equipment and started knocking over everything, the loudness of the breaking glass, the splashing of water, and all the smells icky smells of certain chemicals on the floor. Charles (one of the group members) notices right away; “HEY!!! Stop!!! What are you doing???”…
I’ve always had the impression that fairytales were innocent stories of finding true love and living happily ever after, like the way Disney depicted them to be. I never thought about where these stories came from and the different themes and symbols that were relevant of that time. Some of the things I’ve learned about fairytales have not only shocked me, but has also made me reevaluate everything I know about fairytales. Something I never knew about fairytales is that they weren’t always for children. I’ve always associated them with a younger audience so thinking that these stories were written for adults enjoyment is really crazy to believe.…
Fiction reflects the thoughts, aspirations, and struggles of its author. Through literary works, one can come to understand a cultural consciousness previously unbeknownst to them. With this in mind, historians have learned to use rather than ignore literature as an aid in their studies. Vernacular and modern tales of the Congo region capture both the fantastical and factual elements. Epics, like The Mwindo Epic, echo the foundation of Congolese culture form which thereafter conflict has arisen from.…
